OpenLight Introduces First 800G-DR8 Photonic Integrated Circuit Design to Advance Global Data Center Interconnect Industry | news

The fully validated design provides customers with reduced 800G-DR8 transceiver design effort and accelerated time-to-market for data center applications

MOUNTAIN VIEW, California, 15 December 2022 /PRNewswire/ — OpenLight offers the highest level of performance and scalability to accelerate the design of photonic integrated circuits (PICs) for data communications applications. The company today announced the availability of its first 800G-DR8 PIC design targeting data center interconnects. OpenLight fabricated and tested these wafers using the world’s first open silicon photonics foundry platform with integrated lasers, offered by Tower Semiconductor.

The 800G-DR8 PIC design provides customers with an easy-to-use, proven approach to getting their transceiver production designs off the ground. OpenLight’s performance with on-chip laser integration and high-speed InP-based modulators eliminates the need to purchase and mount additional lasers in a PIC. It offers scalability with high-speed performance and low cost to handle complex designs. Based on Tower Semiconductor’s silicon photonics (PH18DA) manufacturing process, the 800G-DR8 PIC design is a fully validated PIC design with an associated circuit model and available test data sets.

“As the number of users and devices per user increase, the demand for bandwidth and higher data rates will increase exponentially. We see an increase in the adoption of silicon photonics and believe that our unique 800G-DR8 PIC design and available tested models will help customers rapidly design optical transceiver modules and achieve faster time-to-market for new data communication needs,” explained Dr. Thomas Mader, Chief Operating Officer at OpenLight. “Together with Tower, we are able to offer end-to-end scalable design solutions and support the industry’s transition to 800G and beyond for data centers with integrated lasers.”

“Our partnership with OpenLight extends Tower’s existing open foundry-ready offering with new silicon-proven IP, enabling customers to accelerate the development of next-generation silicon photonics products with fully integrated lasers,” emphasized Dr. Marco Racanelli, Senior Vice President and General Manager of Tower Semiconductor’s Analog Business Unit. “The process technology and PDK are available to tower customers along with regularly scheduled shuttle runs. IP for higher requirements, such as the 800G reference design announced here, is available through our partner OpenLight.”

The 800G-DR8-PIC sample kits are available now and come with design files that allow customization if desired. High speed test data is also available. For more information on pricing and availability, please contact OpenLight at
