Should Samsung compromise with camera and design?

When people talk about Samsung smartphones, they’re usually talking about the big, expensive flagship series: the S series, the Fold, the Flip and, previously, the Note. Much lower in price, but no less exciting, is the A series – Samsung’s mid-range offering, which has held its ground in the competitive market for several years.

For example, the Galaxy A53, which was released in March this year, was praised for its high-contrast OLED display and long battery life, although the lack of a connector and a fairly moderately powerful processor were criticized.

In 2023, the successor of the Samsung mobile phone could repair these flaws. The smartphone should appear a little earlier this year than its predecessor. The first images now show us what the Galaxy A54 5G will look like.

Galaxy A54: concessions compared to the predecessor?

The leaked images come from Twitter user @OnLeaks, who shared them with Indian tech site 91mobiles.

In terms of design, Samsung has obviously stayed close to the previous model A53 and the central one Punch a hole kept for the selfie camera and in-display fingerprint scanner. However, the Galaxy A54 is probably a bit shorter, but wider than this year’s model. The edges on the edge of the screen also look thicker than on the predecessor.

Instead of the four lenses on the Galaxy A53, there are now only three on the back. Samsung seems to have either omitted the 5 MP depth sensor or installed it elsewhere. Ultra-wide-angle and macro lenses, as well as a selfie camera, on the other hand, seem to be adopted unchanged.

However, according to leaks from the Dutch colleagues at GalaxyClub, it seems that the main camera does not have megapixels. For this, it only had to come up to 50 MP instead of the previous 64 MP – the same number that the current pixel competitors deliver.

All the information mentioned so far suggests a step back from its predecessor rather than actual improvements. And since Samsung doesn’t seem to be installing a jack in the Galaxy A54 either, at least one of the biggest criticisms of the Galaxy A53 remains unanswered.

So what’s the selling point for the Galaxy A54? It is possible that Samsung uses a more powerful processor in the new mid-range smartphone. According to 91mobiles, an Exynos 7904 must be used here. But since this is an SoC that was released in 2019, that seems unlikely to us – an assessment we share with other sites such as Phonearena.

Instead, we expect Samsung to come up with a newer model that at least beats the Exynos 1280 built into the A53. Coincidentally, Phonearena is reporting a newly discovered Exynos 1380 at this very moment.

Further optimizations could lie within the software area. In addition, the Galaxy A54 should support the new Bluetooth standard 5.3.

Insiders expect the new mid-range smartphone to be released in early 2023. Samsung itself has not yet officially confirmed the existence of a Galaxy A54 and therefore logically has not provided any information on pricing, availability or release date.

However, it is possible that Samsung will present the Galaxy A53 together with its new S series in February. There is also current news from the rumor mill about the camera on the new flagship.
