Porsche Design and Sotheby’s are auctioning two icons from design history

In December, Porsche Design and the auction house Sotheby’s celebrate not only the 50th birthday of the globally successful design brand, but above all the pioneering spirit of the company’s founder Ferdinand Alexander Porsche. With the creation of the legendary Porsche 911, FA Porsche had already written design history when he founded his own design studio in 1972 to transfer the myth and principles of Porsche to other product categories. To this day, his courage, his creativity and his ambition to create something new shape the DNA of the brand.

“The two stand-alone elements are as unique and extraordinary as the legacy of Porsche Design. They embody the fascination and myth of the automotive lifestyle brand and carry FA Porsche’s design philosophy. The exclusive auction in New York honors the pioneering spirit of our company’s founder and is the crowning achievement of our anniversary year. Even half a century after its founding, the brand has lost none of its DNA. Today, our designers work with the same passion to combine timeless, functional design with technical innovation and create tomorrow’s classics,” says Stefan Buescher.

A reminiscence of purist design

The Porsche 911 S 2.4 Targa, built in 1972, was exceptionally restored and refined by the experts at Porsche Classic over a period of two years. As part of the new special request program, which creates individual sports car dreams through the interplay of craftsmanship and attention to detail, the factory was built as a one-off. The classic is the historical counterpart to the limited special model “Porsche 911 Edition 50 Years of Porsche Design” (Type 992).

Both models borrow, among other things, the coloring of the legendary Chronograph I from 1972, the first product design from FA Porsche. The color black dominates both inside and outside. Like the special model, the disposable model is equipped with Sport-Tex in a classic checkered pattern in black/cool grey. As a tribute to the brand’s anniversary, the car bears the “Porsche Design” lettering on both sides. The “50 Years of Porsche Design” logo is also embossed on the headrests and the dashboard is adorned with a silver “911” emblem with the addition “Edition 50 Years of Porsche Design”. As a particular highlight, the Targa bar was glazed in platinum satin finish – a reinterpretation of the brushed stainless steel of the historic model and therefore a perfect match for the new vehicle.

911 S 2.4 Targa

The result is a unique piece that combines origin and modernity, bears Ferdinand Alexander Porsche’s signature and is a reminiscence of the founding year of Porsche Design. “We decided on this vehicle because the 911 has shaped the Porsche legend to this day. It is characterized by its exceptional sportiness and conveys an extraordinary driving experience. I was able to convince myself of this during the last test ,” says Uwe Makrutzki, head of Porsche Classic Factory Restoration. The Porsche factory The era’s top model now draws from 2,341 cm3 Displacement 190 hp at 6,500 rpm and has mechanical fuel injection.”

Porsche Classic restores, designs and refines a handful of unique sports cars each year. In close cooperation with the Porsche Exclusive Manufaktur as part of the so-called co-creation strategy, Porsche reinterprets the legendary special request program from the late 1970s and makes personal individual pieces possible – created by the customer, professionally implemented by Porsche . These are provided with a particularly unique seal that makes their exclusivity and individuality clear. One of the first factory one-offs to receive this exclusive label is the 911 S 2.4 Targa.

Unique auction package

The Chronograph 1 – 911 S 2.4 Targa was specially developed for the auction on 14 December. It is a special edition of the limited anniversary edition of the Chronograph 1, which remains true to the design of the first Porsche Design watch down to the smallest detail and has been adapted to the technical state of the art where necessary.

The historic Porsche Design logo adorns the dial, crown, clasp and case back. Unique is the design of the winding rotor on the back of the case, which corresponds to the historic Fuchs rim from the Porsche 911 S 2.4 Targa from 1972. This was developed using complex construction and testing by the engineers of the in-house watchmaking facility in Solothurn, Switzerland. It is optimized for rotation and converts the movement of the wearer’s wrist into energy to drive the mechanical chronograph caliber. With these design features, it builds a bridge to the classic vehicle and also makes this watch unique. The two design classics are not only a tribute to the close collaboration between the design brand Porsche Design and the sports car manufacturer Porsche, but above all to their shared heritage in the form of Professor Ferdinand Alexander Porsche, the designer of the legendary Porsche 911 and the founder of Porsche Design.
