In Hamburg Altona, Thomas Carstensen’s team builds loudspeakers under the name Inklang. The approach is to pack the best possible sound into the smartest house possible. Inklang places special emphasis on customization. You can choose the surface structure and color of your speakers according to your personal preferences. With the Inklang Ayers Three, we set out to make the company’s smallest and slimmest floorstanding speaker. You can find out in our test whether the slim speaker can cut a convincing figure in our listening studio.

The Ayers Three from Hamburg speaker manufacturer Inklang are designed to impress with their sleek design and excellent sound.

Lean structure with a lot of know-how

Inklang Ayers Three is a floor speaker with a classic 3-way design. The music signal is divided into three areas: the high, mid and low frequency range. The corresponding tweeters and midrange drivers are in the front, the bass driver on the side for reasons of space. Similar to the much larger Mission QX-5 MKII, the front of the speaker can remain as nice and narrow. So Ayers Three grows in depth to create the necessary volume for the good sound.

With a diameter of 30 millimeters, the tweeter is very large for a silk dome. This should enable him to play down to a frequency of 750 Hz. Inklang expects better spatial imaging from this. Its interaction with the midrange should also be improved in this way. Its membrane measures 120 millimeters in diameter and consists of paper reinforced with glass fibers. The lateral bass driver takes care of everything below 100 Hz. Its 180mm cone is also based on the fiberglass paper blend. With it, the Inklang Ayers Three should be able to play up to the range of around 20 Hz.

The diaphragms in the midrange and bass units consist of a particularly stiff fiberglass and paper mixture.

All three drivers get their cue from the artfully designed crossover. It sits in an airtight chamber, which is supposed to protect it from vibrations caused by the changing sound pressure inside the speaker. You don’t see any of this from the outside. Only the large gilded binding posts stick out on the back. A bass reflex channel opens above the large lid, which is intended to support bass reproduction.

The metal panel on which the gold-plated bar clamps sit is particularly large, as in the future there will also be room for an amplifier for the active version of the Ayers Three.

That’s what Inklang Ayers Three sounds like

Tim Minchin performs prejudices a hymn to all the redheads out there. The Queen Elizabeth Hall audience doesn’t know whether to laugh or applaud and just does both. Inklang Ayers Three places you in the middle of the audience and lets you experience the cheers all around you. The stage and instruments are rock solid in front of you, one step forward and you could touch the grand piano. The slim speakers are extremely good for imaging.

The tweeter shown below places each instrument precisely in the space in front of you.

However, this song also reveals a slight weakness of the speaker. S sounds in Minchin’s voice are slightly but noticeably overemphasized. The cymbals also leave a lasting impression thanks to the tweeter. However, there’s no denying that every single part of the drum kit takes shape right in front of you. Voices and instruments also shine with tremendous presence.

Bass: manageable but precise

The pair’s side-mounted woofers just don’t seem to be able to vibrate as much air as you’re used to from a floorstanding speaker of this size. The condemned of A Perfect Circle can usually come with a good deal of bass power. However, the hard drum beats at the start lose some of their usual attacking energy.

Inklang Ayers Three bass units
Although the side bass driver doesn’t offer quite as much bass power, it still has every impulse under precise control.

This may be due in part to the placement of the bass drivers, which until now have faced outwards. We switch the speakers so that the bass drivers now face each other across the room. The bass is immediately stronger and builds noticeably more foundation. This is a bit at the expense of control, but thankfully Inklang has more than enough of that. Although the bass is not quite as high and deep, Ayers Three has all impulses under control.

The tweeter consists of a fairly large fabric dome.

So Inklang Ayers Three might not shake your walls. However, we have rarely encountered their level of precision and ruthlessly honest recording in the listening studio. Their sound is a bit slim and “clean”, but also speaks of good hi-fi virtues. The Inklang Ayers Three is in many ways the exact counterpart to the recently tested Mission QX-5 MKII. Despite a similar setup (bass driver on the side, midrange and treble in front), the Mission offers a much more pronounced bass, but sounds less precise in the mids and highs.

With this structure, Inklang promises to be particularly interesting for modern life situations. Their bass doesn’t overdo it, but it also doesn’t let boredom set in and therefore fits perfectly with the well-designed style of Inklang Ayers Three.

Ayers Three in practice

Fresh out of the box, you should give the Inklang Ayers Three – like any other speaker – a few hours to days to break in. In our listening studio, their sound greatly benefited from this, as only then can the individual diaphragms and drivers develop their full mobility. The effect of two nights unfolding on the floor standing speaker is worth a lot!

Inklang Ayers Three Place diagonally next to each other
Depending on whether you place the Ayers Three with the bass driver inward or outward, you can achieve different effects. It’s worth a try!

How you set it up can make a dramatic difference in the sound of your hi-fi system. As you have already read above, the speakers can develop a completely different character when the bass drivers point inwards or outwards. You can also influence the stage image by turning the speakers slightly towards yourself. If you’re looking for more tips on the ideal placement of your speakers, take a look at our guide.

Resonance Ayers Three bass reflex ports on the rear panel
The narrow slot on the rear wall is the output of the bass reflex channel. It is intended to amplify certain areas of the low frequency range.

Of course, there are many characteristics that determine whether an amplifier will work well with your speakers. However, efficiency can be a first indicator of whether a speaker is easy to tame or not. With an efficiency of only 83 dB, your amplifier should not be too weak on the chest. On a Rotel RA-1592 MKII Inklang can make a superb appearance, but the digital amplifier Lyngdorf TDAI-1120 reaches its limits here.

Inklang Design: Versatile and smashing smart

Ayers Three from Inklang is recognizable as a hi-fi speaker, but at the same time it is also a fashionable room object. The slim shape makes the box quite easy to integrate into most living rooms without drawing too much attention. You can get the Ayers Three in a remarkable range of colors that match the interior perfectly. Inklang offers you 10 different standard colors. However, for an additional fee, Inklang will also respond to your personal color preferences.

Ayers Three promises to look good in any home without drawing too much attention to itself.

Incidentally, the names of the standard colors – just like the speaker itself – often have a connection to Australia. For example, you can order your Ayers Three in Uluru Red or Kalbarri White. In addition, you have the choice between a matt, semi-matt or glossy surface. The workmanship and finish of our pair of speakers (in silk matte Yarrabah White, by the way) is flawless.

In tune Ayers Three feet and letters
The slim Inklang Ayers Three floorstanding speaker stands on a plate made of anodized aluminum and four height-adjustable feet.

Despite its delicate shape, the Inklang Ayers Three weigh a considerable 20.5kg each. This speaks for a pleasantly strong box construction. The base plate in anodized aluminum ensures that the speaker stands solidly despite its high weight and narrow base. Here you can choose between a silver and black version.

Magnetic covers for the front and the bass driver on the side are of course also available, but only at an additional cost. The scope of delivery actually only includes the actual pair of speakers.

Test conclusion Inklang Ayers Three: Top quality designer furniture

With the Ayers Three, Inklang offers you a floor-standing speaker that you can tailor to your individual visual ideas. This speaker is definitely a design object. The sound also matches with its fine resolution and razor-sharp stage presentation. Other speakers may offer you more bass thrust, but the Ayers Three scores with dry precision and razor-sharp imaging. In the fashionably sparsely decorated loft, the slim bass is just right, as is the elegant aesthetic.

If you want to achieve party volume in the living room, speakers with more oomph may suit you better. There are also more suitable speakers for rooms larger than 35 square meters. But if you also want to perceive the finest nuances in your music without putting lavish speaker towers in your living room, the stylish Inklang Ayers Three is the speaker for you.
