With a new name, a sophisticated program, a revised corporate identity and expanded communication channels, Design Zentrum Hamburg now emphasizes the city’s commitment to industry as a relevant location factor
With networking meetings, workshops, conferences and funding programs, Design Zentrum Hamburg will offer support to the design industry and designers in the Hanseatic city and create opportunities for exchange between each other and with business and society. As a municipal initiative and part of the Hamburg Creative Society, design’s economic, innovative and sustainable potential is conveyed even more intensively to partners in science, business and civil society and made visible.
dr Carsten Brosda, senator for culture and media: “The relevance of design for Hamburg is significant – especially for the city’s ability to innovate and as a creative engine at the interface with other sectors. Designers build blueprints for the world of the future. I am happy that with the new name ‘Design Zentrum Hamburg’ and under the leadership of Frances Uckermann, a new resonant space for current issues and concrete products is being created under the Hamburg Kreativ Gesellschaft’s umbrella. This place will make the relevance of design even more visible, both locally, nationally and internationally. I am convinced that the ‘Design Zentrum Hamburg’ will be a wonderful culmination point for the design scene and the location of the creative industry in Hamburg.”
Egbert Rühl, CEO of the Hamburg Creative Society: “Hamburg Kreativ Gesellschaft sees itself as a service provider for professional creative people in the Hanseatic city, with our operational offer we support the industry and its actors comprehensively. The fact that we are once again focusing on this sector with the Design Zentrum Hamburg is not least due to its extraordinary importance for the Hanseatic city. We look forward to a close exchange with the entire design ecosystem, as this is the only way we can develop successful, tailored offerings. I look forward to.”
In the 700 square meter exhibition and event space centrally located in HafenCity, the restart with the recording of the new program after the pandemic-related restrictions can be experienced from spring 2022.
Frances Uckermann, head of the Design Center Hamburg: “With the renaming, we are opening a new chapter. As Design Zentrum Hamburg, we want to significantly improve the industry’s visibility, network and promotion. Design is the key competence to meet the great challenges of our time – Hamburg has the potential to become one of the centers for this new, innovative and sustainable design culture. With this in mind, I look forward to many exciting events, an interested audience and a positive response to the many activities and ideas in the design industry in Hamburg.”
Design in Hamburg
Hamburg is an important national business location for industry. Over 13,000 designers live and work here. With around 4,500 companies in the Hanseatic city, the design industry is at the forefront of the creative industries when measured by the number of companies. The large number of recognized design offices and international agency networks exerts a great attraction on designers. With their skills and expertise in the various design disciplines, they also influence other sectors of the economy. State universities and private academies attract young people, including international ones, and thus create important laboratories for current design research.
