There are first tangible leaks about the appearance and technology of Meta Quest 3. They have one or two surprises in store.

The leaks are once again provided by hardware analyst Bradley Lynch, who has revealed pretty much everything there is to know about the upcoming Meta Quest Pro ( information ) in the past few months. Now it’s time for the as yet unannounced Meta Quest 3.

As always with leaks, the following information should be treated with caution. They may be inaccurate, outdated or simply wrong.

Meta Quest 3 is taking shape

According to a roadmap leaked in May 2022, Meta wants two new, code-named Quest devices aimed at consumers in 2023 and 2024 stinson and cardiff launch. Lynch’s leak concerns Stinson, which his sources say is still slated for a 2023 launch.

As with the Meta Quest Pro, the Youtuber presents several CAD plans of the headset, showing the design and technical equipment. Lynch says the drawings show the more or less final design, but acknowledges that small things can change before mass production.

His sources have also sent him additional details about the technology that cannot be gleaned from the images alone. But first things first.

Focus on mixed reality instead of social presence

Lynch describes the leaked hardware as a “consumer mixed reality device” because it offers a variety of sensors on the front for just this purpose: two black and white cameras, two RGB cameras and a depth sensor. The various sensor data are merged by software and thus enable a high quality passthrough mode similar to Meta Quest Pro.

Two more cameras are installed on the sides of the case, which are used for spatial tracking of the headset.

The biggest surprise is that Meta without sensors for eye and face tracking. Zuckerberg said this spring that these features are a top priority.

Lynch believes that eye and face tracking is currently still too expensive for the Meta Quest 3, as it (like the Meta Quest Pro) requires five additional sensors and an expensive special chip.

New lenses, new form factor

According to the leak, Stinson emphasizes Mixed reality instead of social presence. Meta may deliver eye and face tracking in 2024 with a more expensive Cardiff model aka “Meta Quest 3 Plus”. Between the $400 Meta Quest 3 and the $1000+ Meta Quest Pro, there is theoretical room for another price bracket. But that’s pure speculation at the moment.

The drawings suggest that Meta Quest 3 pancake lentils applications, which is reflected in a narrower design. The VR headset still comes standard with a cloth head covering, which means the battery will be built into the case. The Meta Quest 3 should therefore be more front-heavy than the Meta Quest Pro and Pico 4. The good news is that a more stable head mount can be retrofitted with official or unofficial accessories.

Interesting: According to the CAD plan, the USB-C port and headphone jack are integrated into the headgear bracket.

Leap in performance thanks to the next-generation chip

According to Lynch’s sources, Meta Quest 3 will be included two LC screens be equipped. Meta Quest 2 relies on a unique LC display. The lens distance can be adjusted with a dial, which can be seen in the drawing.

According to Lynch, three switches on the bottom of the case indicate that the Meta Quest 3 will be compatible with the Meta Quest Pro’s charging station.

There is some good news regarding the Meta Quest 3 processing unit. The device will receive a brand new SoC: the Snapdragon XR2 Gen 2, which was leaked under the name Project Halliday. The new chip should bring a big leap in terms of performance.

All current VR headsets and the Meta Quest Pro rely on the XR2 Gen 1, a derivative of the Snapdragon 865 optimized for augmented and virtual reality, which was used in premium smartphones in 2020 and is no longer updated.

Finally, Lynch notes that more expensive Meta Quest 3 SKUs with up to 512 gigabytes of spokesaround 12 gigabytes of RAM could be delivered.
