Driving under the influence of alcohol is extremely dangerous. How much alcohol do you actually have in your blood? And how quickly does alcohol actually break down? After how long can you drive again? The BAC calculator helps determine the approximate time after you sober up again. And with the alcohol calculator you can find out how much alcohol you have in your blood after drinking a certain amount.
In order to determine the blood alcohol level, information about the amount of drinks consumed (and thus the amount of alcohol), your gender, your age and your weight is necessary.

Calculate alcohol reduction and blood alcohol levels: values, limits, formulas
The alcohol content in the blood is calculated in parts per thousand. In contrast to the percentage (hundredth), a part per thousand is a thousandth.
For the amount of alcohol consumed, find the amount of alcohol in grams per glass per drink and multiply it by the number of glasses drunk.
The body weight is multiplied by the distribution factor. As a rule of thumb, this factor is 0.6 for women and 0.7 for men. According to Watson, this rough value can be refined by calculating total body water (GWK) in liters. For this purpose, the information about sex, weight, age and height in the calculator above is used. This should not be confused with BMI.
The blood alcohol concentration in parts per thousand is then calculated using the Widmark formula. Here, the amount of alcohol is set in relation to body weight and the distribution factor. This formula is used to accurately analyze the alcohol content in the blood to plus or minus 0.1 per thousand.
Please be aware that the blood alcohol level calculator and the alcohol calculator can only give indicative values for blood alcohol level and alcohol distribution. These are based on average values and are based on a healthy adult with a normally functioning liver and no medication. In addition, other factors influence the level of alcohol in the blood. For example, the period over which alcohol consumption extends is of great importance. Depending on the time period, alcohol breakdown already occurs during consumption.
What is the alcohol breakdown per hour?
On average, the blood alcohol content is reduced by around 0.1 gram of alcohol per hour. This means that the average alcohol breakdown is between 0.1 and 0.2 parts per thousand per hour. It is higher in men and people with a higher body weight than, for example, in women or rather thin people.
A 40-year-old man weighing 80 kg sobered up within approximately 5 hours after drinking one liter of beer (5% vol). You can calculate individual BAC levels and alcohol excretion times with the alcohol calculator above.
What is the alcohol level in a 0.5 l beer?
- A man who is 1.8 meters tall and weighs 90 kg has a blood alcohol level of about 0.3 after drinking 0.5 liters of beer.
- A woman who is 1.7 meters tall and weighs 70 kg has a blood alcohol level of about 0.4 after drinking 0.5 liters of beer.
- You can calculate individual values with the alcohol calculator above.
What is the alcohol level in a 0.2 l glass of wine?
- A man who is 1.8 meters tall and weighs 90 kg has a blood alcohol level of about 0.2 after drinking 0.2 liters of wine.
- A woman who is 1.7 meters tall and weighs 70 kg has a blood alcohol level of about 0.3 after drinking 0.5 liters of wine.
- You can calculate individual values with the alcohol calculator above.
When will I get sober again?
From a medical point of view, you are only sober again when your blood alcohol level is 0. Out of respect and caution for those around you, this should be the only value you get into a car with.
In terms of road traffic laws, you can still drive with a blood alcohol level of less than 0.3 per thousand, but if you are involved in an accident with a blood alcohol level of less than 0.3 per thousand, the insurance company will not pay.
If you have between 0.3 and 0.5 alcohol per thousand and show conspicuous driving behaviour, you risk fines, points and the withdrawal of your driving licence. 0.5 per thousand leads to at least 4 weeks suspension of the driver’s license, 500 euros in fine and 4 points.
How high is the alcohol content in a long drink?
In order to determine the blood alcohol level, it is important to know the alcohol content of the drinks consumed. The differences between the individual drinks are sometimes significant. What is decisive is the proportion of pure alcohol, the so-called ethanol. This molecule produces the effects typical of poisoning.
The alcohol content of spirits is measured in percentage by volume (vol%). A 100 milliliter glass (0.1 l or 10cl or 1dl) with a drink of 5% by volume therefore contains five milliliters of pure ethanol.
The alcohol content of a long drink depends on which spirit is processed in which quantity. The volume percentage is reduced by adding soft drinks such as lemonade, cola or juice.
A glass of vodka contains approximately twice as much alcohol as a Campari, which at 25% by volume is one of the stronger drinks. A glass of vodka orange therefore contains twice as much alcohol as a glass of Campari orange. A comparison with other drinks shows that many long drinks have something to offer in the true sense of the word. Two long drinks enriched with 4 cl of Campari have approximately the same alcohol content as a full liter of beer.
Conversion of alcohol: milliliters to grams
In order to determine the amount of alcohol and calculate the alcohol level on this basis, it is important to indicate the amount of alcohol in grams instead of milliliters.
Because alcohol is lighter than water, multiply milliliters by 0.8 instead of 1:1 like water, where one milliliter is exactly one gram.
Who can take more? men or women?
Another factor that determines how long blood alcohol levels last is gender. Women generally break down alcohol more slowly than men. They also tend to get drunk faster. Weight and therefore the amount of blood circulating in the body also plays a role.
Attention: This circumstance contributes to the fact that women and men differ in terms of the intensity of alcohol consumption. When men drink alcohol, it is often in larger quantities than women.

Calculation example for a gin and tonic
Gin and tonic, consisting of gin and tonic, is one of the most popular long drinks in the world. The calculation is based on a long drink glass in the standard size of 300 milliliters. If the glass is also filled with ice, then a gin content of between 4 and 6 cl can be assumed. Especially when using high-quality and expensive gins, many bartenders use a measuring cup with 4 cl.
The minimum alcohol content for gin is required by law and is 37.5% alcohol. With the higher quality gins, the alcohol content is often higher, for example 40% or even more. Selected varieties such as Cadenhead’s Old Raj and Blackwood’s Gin have an alcohol content of 55 and 60% respectively.
A gin and tonic has an alcohol content of around 14g. This corresponds to around a glass of red wine or a bottle of beer. In addition to gin and tonic, there are many other long drinks with different alcohol content. The online calculator calculates the value of a shot or another drink in grams for you for free.
alcohol content of the schnapps
What is the alcohol content of a shot?
As already mentioned, the effect of alcohol depends on the amount consumed. This varies from black to black. Added to this is the information on the volume percentage in % vol. projection. This percentage refers to volume. The liter measurement unit is relevant in this context. Thus, in a 0.5 liter bottle of beer with an alcohol content of 5% vol. 25 milliliters of ethanol or pure alcohol.
Wine contains approximately twice as much alcohol as beer. The alcohol content in a glass of wine roughly corresponds to that in a bottle of beer. The range of shots and shots is particularly wide schnapps.
Tequila has an alcohol content of 38 to 40% vol., Vodka is around 40% vol. There are strong fluctuations in the liqueurs. Strong liqueurs reach around 55% vol. Cream, egg and fruit liqueurs are around 20% vol well below. Three vodka shots or three tequilas equals seven shots of Bailey’s and half a liter of beer.
- Blood alcohol content can be estimated using information about gender, body weight and drinks.
- Illness, medication and poor physical condition have a negative impact on blood alcohol levels.
- Stop drinking and driving! Anyone who has consumed alcoholic beverages should no longer drive.
