The square, ultra-stable, waterproof wall box wins the prestigious International Forum (iF) award

Juice Technology AG, manufacturer of charging stations and software, leader in mobile charging stations for electric cars, is the winner of this year’s iF Design Awards with the JUICE CHARGER me 3.

JUICE CHARGER me 3 is not only very popular with customers, but is also the new favorite of design experts. After the aesthetic wall box had already been awarded the Red Dot Design Award 2022, it now also wins one of the highest design awards at international level – the iF Design Award 2022.

No fewer than 10,776 products and projects applied for this year’s iF Design Award. From this record number, a top international, independent panel of 132 design experts selected 5,426 entries. In the final round, each entry was assessed, discussed and judged by a jury based on five criteria. JUICE CHARGER me 3 was chosen as the winner of the iF Design Award 2022 in the category cars/motor vehicles.

The wall charging station was evaluated in a transparent, structured process and with regard to idea, form, function, brand differentiation and effect. With its simple square shape with clear lines and elegant curves, the JUICE CHARGER me 3 appeals particularly to the target group that expects forward-looking technology and appealing aesthetics. The special design makes the charging station highly functional, absolutely safe (IP67 and IK10), easy to operate and therefore extremely user-friendly. The minimalist, high-quality appearance raises the charging station to a new level of design and makes it not only functional, but also visually part of the vehicle. In addition, the well-thought-out construction allows for easy personalization of the front glass for large customers, without the overall design losing its effect. “For us, high-quality design does not stop with the e-car,” continues Christoph Erni. The resource-saving design and the ability to update over-the-air prove the future viability of the device, which in turn takes into account the idea of ​​sustainability.

This aspect in particular is also welcomed by the jury: “It is inspiring to see that there are signs of more sustainable approaches in design – sustainability is the new luxury. Which means that some of the old ambitions are being replaced by new and meaningful aspirations,” says Stina Nilimaa Wickström, Vice President Volvo Group Design, Sweden.

  1. Plug&Play: The wall box is completely pre-configured from the factory and ready for immediate use.
  2. Connect and charge: JUICE CHARGER me 3 already supports ISO 15118. When connected to the charging socket, the charging station automatically recognizes every registered car that already has the Plug-and-Charge standard and starts charging immediately.
  3. Charging and load management: Local dynamic charging control in master-slave operation is included free of charge for up to 250 charging points.
  4. small format: With an edge length of 28 cm and a depth of 12.5 cm, the JUICE CHARGER me 3 is extremely compact and also very light at only 6.5 kg (incl. cable). 5 m cable provides the necessary flexibility.
  5. Charging power: Single- to three-phase charging with six to 32 amps provides a charging power of up to 22 kW. The standard version delivered from the factory with an output of 11 kW can be upgraded to 22 kW via software.
  6. Prepared for the public domain: JUICE CHARGER me 3 is optionally available with a MID-certified (calibrated) meter and optionally with built-in FI/LS (residual current device/miniature circuit breaker) – prepared for direct connection to power rails or ribbon cables.
  7. Connection: The standardized Open Charge Point Protocol (OCPP 1.5/1.6) forms the backbone of the connection to JUICE EXO (or backends and building management systems from third-party providers) and enables device management, remote maintenance, billing or load management. Three standardized interfaces (Modbus/TCP, Modbus/RTU and EEBUS) ensure communication with an energy management system in the home. This makes it possible to integrate the solar system into the domestic energy management and the external load management control. External communication takes place either via the Ethernet connection (LAN, RJ45) or the integrated WLAN receiver. However, for use as a private single charging station, no permanent network connection is required and operation is therefore also possible without a LAN connection. In this case, a notebook can simply be plugged in for updates.
  8. Thoughtful and safe design: JUICE CHARGER me 3 has a front made of scratch-resistant acrylic glass (PMMA) that is printed on the inside. The shell of the outer box and the bottom of the inner box are made of a composite plastic consisting of polycarbonate (PC) and acrylonitrile butadiene styrene (ABS). ABS is characterized by good impact, scratch and abrasion resistance as well as resistance to oils and fats. The composite is extremely stable, flame retardant and certified UV resistant. The transparent cover of the inner housing is made of impact-resistant polycarbonate (PC). The base and lid are screwed together to form a tightly sealed system. This means that the charger is protected against the ingress of dirt and moisture according to IP67, is very impact resistant according to IK10 and is therefore suitable for both indoor and outdoor use. The device can be used at outside temperatures between -30°C and +50°C. Its temperature sensor to reduce the charging current works regardless of the ambient temperature. The charging station is CE-compliant according to the two EMC directives IEC 61851 and IEC 61439-7.
  9. Assembly: JUICE CHARGER me 3 can be mounted on the wall as a wall box – in surface or flush mounting (with supply cable from behind). Since all the electronics are placed on a back plate and are therefore independent of the housing, it is also possible to turn the charging station 180° and connect it to a supply line coming from above. However, the device can also be installed singly or in pairs on a stand.
  10. Unlock: An RFID reader (MIFARE Classic/Desfire) is integrated behind the front panel. Activation via RFID is for all cars that do not support the ISO standard 15118 for ‘Plug and Charge’. The two included, pre-programmed cards can be easily blocked and replaced if they are lost. Optionally, the customer’s existing RFID badges (e.g. from access or canteen systems) can also be read in and authorized.
