Fug and Janina: “Children are right”

They are not only musicians, entertainers, actors – as official ambassadors for the Catholic Youth Agency in Cologne, Fug and Janina also support young people in need and children’s rights. Just in time for World Children’s Day on 20.9. they have now recorded the song “We are children with rights!” together with school children. The goals are ambitious: children’s rights should become fundamental rights.

“Children’s rights are human rights” says the song, which Fug and Janina recently recorded on CD. It is a project from the Catholic Youth Agency (KJA) Cologne, realized together with children from the Edith Stein school in Frechen.

And the kids happily rap to themselves. It talks about upbringing without violence, equal opportunities for everyone, the right to play and laugh and a privacy (see text below for download).

It appears as pop and with fast beats, but has a serious background: “The song is an appeal to adults to finally implement these rights. Formulated in children’s language,” explains Janina Burgmer.

Children’s rights are enshrined in the UN Convention on the Rights of the Child. They include, among other things, the best interests of the child, the right to life, identity or the will of the child.

It sounds obvious, but it isn’t.

“The rights are not part of the basic rights in Germany,” explains project manager and communications manager Daniel Könen from KJA Köln. Fug and Janina want to change that together with Könen. And has now started the children’s rights project.

All three of them know that there is a lot to drill through. Because the rights are also accompanied by obligations in the implementation.

The schools focus on the subject

But it works, the children’s rights song is well received: “We get many inquiries from schools about the song,” explains Könen. The CD and video would make teachers and children aware of the subject.

Fug Morente Gómez reports from schools in Bergisch Gladbach that want to focus on the subject in the near future. “It’s about strong children, strong schools,” he reveals.

And something is also happening on the political scene: “The Children’s Commission in the German Bundestag has come forward. They want to bring the song to Berlin,” says Könen happily.

But he remains a realist: “Let’s see how far we can go.”

positive outlook

The collaboration with Fug and Janina has been going on for a long time, says Könen. Since the summer, the two musicians have also been official ambassadors for KJA Köln.

“We were simply looking for people who would take the issue of children’s rights forward with a positive message. It’s no use just pointing to the deficits,’ says Könen.

“This is no longer a leisure song,” says Könen. Janina adds: “The message is: We have these rights, so take care of yourself!”

You and Fug know what you’re talking about. “Precisely because we are parents, we know the importance of children’s rights.”
