As part of the “Classic for Children” festival in Leipzig, which has been held annually since 2006, there are also exciting workshops leading up to the festival this year, where children can learn what is needed in a very practical way. to perform music. From 22 to 24 September 2022, children from about 8 years old can learn to conduct, invent music or create a stage design in three workshops. Ultimately, everything will be presented to the public at concerts on September 23 and 24, 2022.
Let’s start with that Workshop “Conducting Children” led by University Music Director David Timm, which takes place on four consecutive dates from September 20 to 24. The children can try out what a conductor does in an orchestra. After dry practice on the piano, they can try out what they have learned with musicians on individual instruments and later with a full ensemble. It is not necessary to be able to play an instrument or to know sheet music, the children only need to have a curiosity about classical music.
If you don’t have much time, you can come to the Mendelssohnhaus for the taster lesson “Conducting” on 24 September, where the children slip into the role of conductor and lead a virtual orchestra or a virtual choir.
For children who play an instrument or like to sing, there is am 23 and 24 September the workshop “Invent radio play music”. Scary movies, computer games or adventures – the music sounds different in each movie or play. Where does it come from? How does a scene become eerie or bright, what does a blue sky sound like, and what is the sound of a secret? Under the direction of the composer Aristides Strongylis, the children learn to find the right thing and to improvise free of musical text or to invent sounds and music.
in The children will tinker and build in the workshop “We design a stage set” on 22 September the stage decoration for the opening concert of the “Classic for Children” festival, where a shortened version of Engelbert Humperdinck’s opera “Sleeping Beauty” is performed. A rose that does not fade, a thorn hedge that does not mock, a house for Sleeping Beauty – how can it look, what fits the music and in a large church, so that the audience can understand where the story leads to place. All children who like to do needlework, paint and decorate can join.
The handmade stage decoration will then be used on Friday 23 September 2022 at 18:00 at the opening of the “Classical for Children” festival.
The children from the “Conducting” and “Radio Play Music” workshops will be involved on Saturday 24 September 2022 at 15.00 in the concert “Alarm about Tin Robber Rascal Banden” – radio play concert to participate, watch or hold your ears”.
