At its new location in Charlottenburg in Berlin, the stilwerk team transforms a former multi-storey car park from 1930 into a modern design center and presents its new concept here. Spread over four floors, in open areas, in the historic “Heinrichsboxen” and in octagons, interior design and lifestyle brands, retailers and service providers will display their products. There is also a wide range of retail and gastronomy options on the ground floor. A spacious event area above the roofs of Berlin completes the offer. On the sixth floor, a luxurious penthouse apartment with a large roof terrace is for rent. And right next to it, the stilwerk Hotel KantGaragen has been welcoming design-savvy guests since August. For the first time in its 26-year history, stilwerk combines showrooms and the hotel industry in one place, ensuring positive synergy effects for suppliers and customers. On 7 and 8 October 2022, the unique building ensemble of historic and modern architecture will be presented to the public as part of the Design & Art Festival.

We have our proven concept, where we have always relied on ‘collaboration instead of competition’, at this location further optimized. Thematically curated design worlds with fluid transitions are created in open areas and in ‘brand:spaces’. Brands and retailers present themselves here in an attractive environment; customers can expect a holistic design experience complemented by art, culture, gastronomy and hospitality” , keep it up. “We look forward to this new location, which will embody everything that defines the stilwerk brand.”
Design at all levels
On the ground floor, visitors will find a special design kiosk and concept store with a large selection of lifestyle items, home accessories, stationery, flowers, drinks and snacks. In addition, guests on this floor can look forward to a pop-up area with changing themes as well as a wide range of gastronomic options in the bar, lounge, restaurant and on the terrace. The design center’s reception also serves as check-in for the adjacent stilwerk hotel, which can be entered directly from the center.
The architecturally extraordinary double spiral – previously used by cars – leads visitors: inside flowing from the ground floor up to the fifth floor. On each level, a varied selection of interior designs is presented in open spaces, in octagons and in historic “Heinrichsboxen” – former parking lots; the visitor is immersed in an inspiring world of design. In addition to this, changing art and design exhibitions are presented on the spiral ramp’s “art walk”.

Experience design – in stilwerk Hotel KantGaragen
Right next to the design center, living dreams come true in the stilwerk Hotel KantGaragen. With their usual creative hand, the stilwerk team ensures an individual design experience in each of the 61 “studios”. Equipped with timelessly beautiful furniture, accessories, lighting, rugs and wall colors, each “atelier” becomes a jewel of interior design. In doing so, those responsible rely on a skillful mix of design icons and young drafts, modern classics, clear lines and extravagant details. Selected production quality, natural materials and sustainable production are taken into account when choosing the interior. Brands such as Thonet, Carl Hansen & Søn, Gubi, Menu, TEBTON®, Porcelanosa, Fennobed and Samland are involved in the interior design.
The stylishly designed breakfast room and an integrated bookshop café also ensure a real ‘home away from home’ feeling for every guest. And if you want even more design experiences, you can look for and find your new favorite piece of furniture in the adjacent centre, linger in the restaurant or on the terrace, enjoy an exhibition or book the event area for a party. The Stilwerk Hotel KantGaragen, managed by Jessica Schöndorf, has been open to visitors since the end of August.
History and architectural highlights
While the KantGaragen can look back on many years of eventful history and is considered an iconic monument, the adjacent new building of the stilwerk Hotel on the site of the former Villa Schulze also offers architectural features.
KantGaragen was built in 1930 by the architects Lohmüller Korschelt & Renker in collaboration with Hermann Zweigenthal alias Herrey and Richard Paulick on behalf of the Jewish engineer Louis Serlin in the New Objectivity style; Significant features still preserved today were and are the double helix, the garage spaces known as the “Heinrichsboxen” with their sliding doors designed by Paul Heinrichs, which are unique in the world, and the curtain wall made of glass at the back of the building. A checkered history of war, expropriation and compensation characterizes KantGaragen, which miraculously remained almost intact during the bombing. The multi-storey car park was, with an interruption during the war years, used until 2017 as a car garage with an integrated gas station. stilwerk will honor the history of this unique example of Bauhaus building culture and motoring with appropriate exhibitions; Furthermore, historical features have been preserved to a large extent during the renovation in terms of monument protection.
Stilwerk Hotel KantGaragen, which was built on the site of the Schulze garden center villa destroyed in World War II, was designed by Berlin architects Nalbach & Nalbach. The facade was made of individual ceramic panels, which ensure an attractive exterior and a comfortable insulation and sound insulation inside. The modern new building, which was completed in 2022, blends harmoniously into its surroundings and forms a skilful contrast to the neighboring Bauhaus monument.
Today, nothing remains of the “Groschenkeller”, a public bar in the former Villa Schulze, which at the same time served as a canteen for the drivers of the car owners who used the Kant workshops; However, the fact that there is still a close connection between the design center and the neighboring hotels can be seen as a skillful continuation of this history.
