Winner of design and technology: Hyundai IONIQ 5 is the family car of the year 2022

The Hyundai IONIQ 5 wins twice in the readers’ choice “Family Car of the Year 2022” by the trade magazine Auto/Straßenverkehr. The E-CUV beats competitors such as the Audi Q4 e-tron and the VW Touran in the vehicles between 25,000 and 35,000 euros in the design and technology categories. A total of 82 vehicles competed in this price category – all with a boot volume of at least 400 litres. More than 10,000 readers participated in the eleventh edition of the online survey.

“For us, a reader’s choice is always a good indicator of the extent to which we have managed to respond to our customers’ needs with our products. We are very proud that readers voted the Hyundai IONIQ 5 as number 1 in two categories, both in the imports and in the overall ranking. The IONIQ 5 not only offers an innovative electric drive, but is also fully suitable for families thanks to its space and various functions. With the E-CUV, we have set new standards for family-friendly electric vehicles. And we will continue this with new models,” says a happy Jürgen Keller, CEO of Hyundai Motor Deutschland GmbH.

Whether it’s the relaxation function for the front seats during charging breaks, everyday rows for the next resort, vehicle-to-charge function for tablets during long car journeys – the IONIQ 5 offers a wealth of equipment features that rightly make it the “family” Award winner of the year car 2022.

Hyundai IONIQ 5 is the first model of the new electric sub-brand Hyundai IONIQ. It is based on the Electric Global Modular Platform (E-GMP) developed by Hyundai Motor Group specifically for battery electric vehicles. With the Hyundai IONIQ 5, this platform allows customers to choose between two battery sizes – 58 and 77.4 kWh – and either four-wheel drive or rear-wheel drive. Both batteries can be charged from 10 to 80 percent in 18 minutes at suitable fast charging stations, which means that a range of 100 kilometers can be charged in five minutes. Depending on the configuration, the electric car achieves a system performance of up to 239 kW/325 hp (electricity consumption in kWh/100 km: combined 18.8-17.6; CO2 emissions ig/km combined: 0) and offers a range of up to 507 kilometers according to the WLTP standard.

The IONIQ 5 also has the vehicle-to-load function. It can be used to supply all electrical devices such as e-scooters or tablets with 230 volt alternating current while driving or stationary.

In addition to a wide range of driving options, the Hyundai IONIQ 5 also impresses with innovative ideas in the interior. Natural materials underline the vehicle’s sustainable character. For example, the collaboration between Hyundai and the marine conservation organization Healthy Seas results in the optional ECONYL® yarn used in the floor mats of the E-CUV, which is made by founder Aquafil from recycled fishing nets along with other nylon waste.

Flexibly adjustable front seats with a relaxation function ensure maximum comfort: they enable the driver and front passenger to lean back at an ergonomically optimal angle. The rear seats can be adjusted in inclination and moved forward or backward by up to 135 millimeters. Rear passengers can use the cup holders and USB ports in the center console, which also slides between the driver and front passenger seats. The two outermost rear seats are available as optional extras with heated seats. The luggage compartment holds between 527 and 1,587 liters (with the rear seat smokers folded down).

A 12.25-inch screen each for the cockpit and infotainment system reflects the E-CUV’s exemplary connectivity. As one of the few electric cars, the Hyundai IONIQ 5 can also tow trailers with a permissible total weight of up to 1,600 kilos.
