XXL TEST: Samsung QN800B – 8K series 2022 in the mid-range impresses with full equipment and the best price/performance ratio

26 August 2022 (Philipp Kind)

The Samsung QN800B is available in 65, 75 and 85 inches at current market prices of just under EUR 3,100, EUR 4,100 and EUR 6,100.

The core function of the middle of the three 8K series from Samsung, like the top series QN900B, is “Quantum Matrix Technology Pro”. The backlight is now controlled with even greater precision, which has a positive effect on the depth of the black value, detail contrast and contrast range. 2022 “Neural Quantum Processor 8K enables excellent processing of any available source material. Instead of a single neural network, the processor accesses data from 20 neural networks, so that even a computationally intensive 8K image appears authentic down to the smallest detail.

The QN800B series models are now Dolby Atmos compatible as standard (including the new “Top Channel” speakers for more realistic 3D sound) and come with “Infinity Screen” with maximum viewing area (99 percent). The “Attachable Slim One Connect Box & One Cable Solution” (a particularly compact external connection box that can be installed directly on the rear TV stand or separately) is also part of the equipment scope.

In terms of HDR technology, compatibility with HDR10, HDR10+ Adaptive and HLG remains the same – Dolby Vision will also be omitted in 2022. The QN800B series has a particularly wide viewing angle, in Samsung jargon “Ultra Viewing Angle”, a very low input layer of 6 ms and Ultimate 8K Dimming Pro for first-class detail contrast. Dolby Digital Plus is supported, as is the Samsung-specific Q Symphony feature. Here you can expand the TV’s sound system with a compatible Samsung soundbar. A 70 watt 4.2.2-channel speaker system is responsible for good acoustic reserves. Bluetooth audio is also supported. Integrated language assistants for Amazon Alexa and Google Assistant as well as a DVB-C/DVB-S2/DVB-T2 dual tuner complete the equipment.

The connectivity equipment includes 4 HDMI inputs, 1 optical digital output, an Ethernet slot, a CI+ slot, a USB-C for camera connection, WiFi 6, BT 5.2 and 3 x USB. HDMI 2.1 features include 8K@60Hz, 4K@120Hz, VRR, HDR10+, ALLM, eARC.

Let’s briefly look at the differences compared to the top-end QN900B series. The large series has Quantum HDR3000 (65 inches) or Quantum HDR4000 (75 and 85 inches), and the speaker system is more complex and powerful in the QN900B models.

The QN800B series also has an anti-reflective coating in front of the panel itself. This clever measure reduces disturbing reflections to a minimum. “Eye Comfort Mode” provided by Samsung takes local sunrise and sunset times into account. Based on these values, it is then possible to optimize the screen settings. Furthermore, the TV reduces brightness and color saturation after sunset to protect the viewer’s eyes – in the sense of the best possible relaxation.

“Real Depth Enhancer” is responsible as image depth optimization for a three-dimensional image. It mimics exactly how the human eye perceives depth by increasing the contrast in the foreground of the image – while the electronics leave the background of the image in its original state.

The subject of “gaming” is becoming increasingly important, not least because of today’s high-tech consoles and high-speed PCs. Samsung is therefore well aware of the “Motion Xcelerator Turbo Pro” feature. The first-class 4K/144 Hz display of moving images on the screen proves the excellent performance with precise, sharp images. This also includes accurate motion rendering. Due to the compatibility with AMD FreeSync Premium Pro Standard, image stuttering and screen tearing are drastically reduced. This enables an authentic gaming experience even with HDR gaming. Latency is extremely low. Additional features include Super Ultra Wide Game View, Dynamic Black EQ and Game Motion Plus. The Samsung QN800B 8K TVs are also compatible with HGiG.

That the QN800B series is compatible with Dolby Atmos is already mentioned above in the report. Object Tracking Sound+ (OTS+) is an additional measure to realize an authentic acoustic table that fits the image exactly. Using sound positioning and scene analysis, the system follows the movements of the objects on the screen. The largest series QN900B offers the even more advanced “OTS Pro”.

What can be said about the handling? The Samsung 2022 Smart Hub is kept neatly arranged, as will be shown later when you set up and use the 8K TV. According to Samsung, the focus is on “finding and discovering” content, so that searching for content takes a minimum of time. Convenience is increased by the division into the three categories “media”, “games” and “backgrounds”. The Samsung Smart Things app is of course also part of it – the TV automatically recognizes other compatible Samsung devices, which can also come from other areas – e.g. household appliances or the like.

The middle 8K series is also suitable for video calls on the large screen of the television. Thanks to the partnership with Google Duo and MS Teams, you have the opportunity to choose the preferred application. In addition to the Samsung Slim Fit camera and the Logitech webcam, you can also connect your own smartphone camera, making access to video calls particularly easy.

Stylish and solid metal frame

Classic designed stand

At first glance, the design of the Samsung QN800B shows no significant differences compared to the previous 2021 generation. The base is still located in the middle, made of metal, looks solid and has a black and slightly textured surface. The narrow silver metal frame basically shows a small distance to the display, but the gap is not uniform all the way around. In some positions, the display connects seamlessly, which looks very elegant, in other places there is a gap of about 2 mm between the frame and the panel. This is, of course, high-level criticism that can certainly be leveled at this premium TV. If you keep a certain distance from the TV, which is normal, the small and different distances between the frame and the panel are no longer noticeable.

rear complete

In the lower area, there is a bar that is about 1 cm high, and the Samsung logo including the status LED is located below it on the right. As already mentioned, the frame is in metal and silver and looks very elegant in combination with the black screen when it is turned off. The perforated metal structure on the sides and top also contributes to the attractive visual appearance. The spine also has an interesting structure and is interrupted in some places. On the one hand, there are additional perforations, for example for ventilation, on the other hand, the bass units of the integrated audio system are also visible here. Together with the screw openings on the VESA bracket and the clearly visible transmission of the signals from the Attachable One Slim Connect Box, the back does not look quite as clean as on some other flat screens. The overall depth of the Neo QLED 8K TV is between 1.7 and 1.8 cm.
