Is it still worth buying in 2022?

Smartphones from the Galaxy A50 series from Samsung are among the most popular mobile phones in Germany. On the one hand, it is reflected in the sales, but on the other hand, it is also reflected in our list of the best. No wonder the Samsung Galaxy A52, which was released on March 17, 2021, led the ranking from mid-April to early August 2021. And even today it is in 5th place. Therefore, the question of whether it is still worth buying the Samsung Galaxy A52 in 2022 seems a little premature. But appearances are deceptive because there are good reasons for asking this question.

Samsung Galaxy A52: The hardware

The Galaxy A52 can be found in the mid-range segment. You will look in vain for advanced technology here. But it is not necessary either, because those interested are primarily interested in the good price-performance ratio. Still, the mobile phone doesn’t have to hide when it comes to hardware. Buyers get a smartphone with a 6.5-inch Super AMOLED screen, a resolution of 1080×2400 pixels and a pixel density of 405 ppi. Meanwhile, the phone is powered by a Qualcomm Snapdragon 720G processor or a Snapdragon 750G chip. Because the device was presented in two versions: as Samsung Galaxy A52 and as Samsung Galaxy A52 5G. The latter supports the latest 5G mobile transmission standard, but apart from that, both devices are largely identical.

Both can be purchased in versions with 128/6GB of storage or 256/8GB of storage, and both offer a 64-megapixel main camera with an f/1.8 aperture, as well as a 12-megapixel ultra-wide-angle sensor, a 5-megapixel macro sensor and a 5-megapixel depth sensor. Furthermore, there is a 4,500 mAh battery in each of the two cases, and in terms of connectivity, one looks in vain for contrasts other than the 5G mobile transmission standard. WLAN standard Wi-Fi 6? Each non-existent. But it’s not that bad. Because even in 2022, 5G-compatible agreements and Wi-Fi 6 routers are not necessarily part of the agenda. You will hardly notice a difference in everyday life.

And the same goes for the computing power, but there is one notch: the successor, the Galaxy A53 5G, which was released in April 2022, already offers a battery capacity of 5,000 mAh. 4,500 mAh, on the other hand, is already below average and therefore not optimal.

Software and updates

The two siblings, Samsung Galaxy A52 and Galaxy A52 5G, came with the operating system Google Android 11. In the further process, the software should receive three more version updates, so that buyers can also count on Android 14. In the meantime, security updates will be delivered for another twelve months – that is, until March 2025. Buyers therefore do not need to worry about updates and smartphone security even today.

Value for money in 2022

When the Samsung Galaxy A52 hit the market, it put 349 euros on the price scale at best. The 5G version even cost 429 euros at best, since the new transmission standard was a special feature at the time. In the meantime, however, times have changed again, although the purchase price only reflects this to a limited extent in light of the persistent shortage of semiconductors. If you want to buy the Samsung Galaxy A52 today, you need to spend around 275 euros at best. With the Galaxy A52 5G, it is even 309 euros. You will look in vain for a big discount as part of the typical Android price drop. And that is the crux of the matter. Because although the hardware and software on the Samsung Galaxy A52 remain up to date, the price-performance ratio is no longer optimal. This becomes clear at the latest when you look at what is probably the best alternative: the Galaxy A52s.

The Samsung Galaxy A52s was launched in August 2021 and will therefore receive updates for a little longer. It also offers a more powerful processor, and the 5G transmission standard is also included – as is Wi-Fi 6. Price: from just under 300 euros.

Conclusion on the Samsung Galaxy A52

Basically, it’s still worth buying a Samsung Galaxy A52 in 2022. Or it would be if it wasn’t for the highly acceptable price-performance ratio, which can’t even compete with the newer Galaxy A52s. So if you really want a Samsung smartphone, you should spend a few more euros and go for the s version.
