Mannheim: bottleneck in painkillers for children – regional economy

Mannheim. In Germany, pharmacies are currently struggling with supply bottlenecks for medicines for children. The Federal Institute for Drugs and Medical Devices (BfArM) confirms in a statement that there is a particular shortage of fever juice with the active ingredients ibuprofen and paracetamol. Extensive research and tests have therefore already been carried out. After that, the bottlenecks are mainly due to the withdrawal of a provider. In addition, there is also a “distribution problem”. And finally, the demand for the substances in question has increased disproportionately this year. The reasons for this have not yet been satisfactorily determined.

In addition to corona, various other infectious diseases are currently on the rise in Germany. Fever is a common symptom in children. As they are usually not yet able to swallow tablets, juices and suppositories are considered to be a form of administration of the active ingredients that is particularly suitable for children. However, the juices do not have as long a shelf life as tablets and are therefore not as profitable for manufacturers. Many have therefore moved production to Asia, where a large part of the medicine has been stuck in ports for several months due to the corona lockdown.

The pharmaceutical wholesaler Phoenix in Mannheim is responsible for the distribution of the medicines. The company describes itself as a “leading integrated healthcare provider” and supplies around 60,000 pharmacies in Europe with almost 40,000 employees. On the question of RNZ, however, Phoenix himself did not want to comment on the painkiller problem and instead referred to the Association of Pharmaceutical Wholesalers (PHAGRO), to which the Mannheimers themselves belong. “At the moment it is actually the case that pharmaceutical wholesalers cannot fully process orders for juices containing paracetamol or ibuprofen,” said a spokeswoman for the association.
