Safe at school
Free cycling courses for children and adults

As part of the municipal campaign “Fahr Rad in Aachen”, young and old must practice how to get to school safely on two wheels – also training with pedelecs.

School starts again next week, and many children and young people will jump on the bike to cycle to school. In doing so, they not only do good for the environment, but also for their fitness and independence. A good alternative to the “parent taxi”, which drives the children to the school gate and picks them up again.

Because: Independent and responsible action is part of the development of a child, to strengthen self-esteem. Children who travel alone in traffic are challenged. You are responsible for yourself and must make your own decisions. It makes you strong and confident.

To give children the skills to ride safely in traffic, the municipal campaign “Fahr Rad in Aachen” from the Department of Urban Development, Planning and Mobility Infrastructure of the City of Aachen offers various courses.

In part, there are cycling courses for primary school children in the afternoon all year round, and for primary schools there are traffic lessons with cycling training in the morning. On the other hand, primary and secondary schools can participate in the “Cycle to school” campaign.

The way to school by bicycle is practiced in small groups. A new offer from the municipal campaign is bicycle training with traffic education for young people. After a short refresher on the rules of the road, the young people’s skills are tested in the safety room. This is followed by an exit where various points such as indirect left turns are practiced using practical examples and danger points are pointed out.

Requirements for participation: a roadworthy bicycle, a bicycle helmet and, if possible, a visible vest. All courses are free, but binding registration at is required.

Cycling courses for adults

But the municipal campaign “Fahr Rad in Aachen” also offers training programs for adults. Cycling is a good way to keep fit and flexible. This applies to all age groups. Here, the road safety aspect is very important, because cyclists are largely unprotected in traffic.

More and more cyclists are also switching to a pedelec or using a cargo bike. With an offer for cyclists who can cycle, but feel unsafe and would like to refresh their driving practice, the main aim is to contribute to maintaining the joy of cycling for as long as possible and at the same time to prevent traffic accidents.

This two-day course is also suitable as an introduction to anyone who wants to learn to cycle. In a basic and advanced course for pedelecs and a course for cargo bikes, participants learn to familiarize themselves with the technology using special exercises.

For those who are considering buying a pedelec, the pedelec test days offer a good opportunity to try different models and take part in a training session at the same time.
