You can create a Google Kids Account for children under the age of 13 and limit the content displayed through the child account. Mother and father then only give access to certain apps and games, e.g. Additionally, only adult content appears in Google searches. If the child gets older, the child account can be converted to a normal account.

Google: Create a child account

There is no official Google child account. However, you can create a regular Google Account for your child and manage, monitor and restrict it through the Google Family Link app.

What you need:

  • Your child needs a smartphone with at least Android 7.0 Nougat, which they are signed into with their Google child account.
  • As a parent, you can download the free “Google Family Link” app for Android or iOS.
  • Creating and setting up the child account takes about 30 minutes.

For Android:

For iOS:

  2. Tap ” at the top rightcabinet(+).
  3. Follow the on-screen instructions until you see an on-screen confirmation that the account has been created.
  4. Then log in to the child’s smartphone with the newly created Google child account.

Only allow certain apps for children

The Google Play Store is usually the app through which new apps and content are installed. How to make it adult-friendly:

  1. Open the Google Play Store on the child’s smartphone and sign in with the child’s Google account if you haven’t already done so.
  2. Tap it on the top left Menu icon ☰ and choose “settings“out.
  3. Push “Parental control“.
  4. Activates the switch at the top of the “Protection of minors disabled‘ to turn it on.
  5. Assign a pin code that only you as the parent must know. This changes the parental control settings. Repeat the PIN code and confirm with “Okay“.
  6. Now click on “apps and games“, “movie“, “series“and”music‘ to set the allowed FSK level there. Then press “Save to computer“. Other apps and content outside the FSK level you have set will then no longer appear in the Google Play Store. However, apps that are already installed are still available on the children’s smartphone.

Hide adult content in web searches

The “Google Chrome” browser is the default browser on almost all Android smartphones. You can set it to only show adult content in Google searches:

  1. Opening the browser app “Google Chrome‘ on the child’s smartphone.
  2. Opens the website www.google.de in the browser.
  3. Tap it on the top left Menu icon ☰ and choose “settings“out.
  4. Enabled under “SafeSarch filter“the opportunity”Hide offensive results‘ and confirm below with ‘Save to computer“.

However, the child can very easily deactivate this himself if he knows how to do it in the settings, because the setting here is not protected with a PIN code. In addition, this protection of minors can be bypassed if a different browser or search engine is used. We therefore recommend making the necessary settings in the “Google Family Link” app on the parents’ smartphone, if you have not already done so:

Convert Google child account to regular account

If your child is at least 13 years old, the Google child account can be converted to a normal account:

  1. Open the “Google Family Link” app on your smartphone.
  2. Select your child’s account that you no longer want to manage.
  3. Push “manage settings“>”Account information“>”end parental control“.
  4. Follow the on-screen instructions to convert the child account to a regular Google Account.
