Children and babies in the Ruhr area in danger – cities sound the alarm

The city of Essen warns of extreme heat. Other cities in Ruhr area has sounded the alarm. Primarily children and Babies is now in great danger!

Children and babies in the Ruhr area may soon be exposed to temperatures they are not used to. The temperatures, which are popular in Essen, Dortmund, Duisburg and Co., are also atypical of the region in summer – up to 40 degrees.

Cities warn of extreme heat – and have important tips for parents

Various cities in the Ruhr area have issued warnings in the past few days. The city of Essen has once again explicitly pointed out how dangerous extreme heat is for vulnerable groups – including the homeless, the elderly and children.

The latter represent a special case because they cannot protect themselves from the temperatures on their own, but are dependent on the help of their parents or other caregivers. “Babies and children are particularly dependent on adults to take care of them responsibly – the little ones do not yet know how best to behave when it is very hot,” says Carsten Bluhm, head of the Youth Office in Essen Municipality, appealing to everyone parents.

“Summer heat is coming in Germany this and next week. “Temperatures can be reached that endanger health,” the city of Essen said in a statement. Tropical temperatures can be very stressful for the body, it is said. Together with the youth office and the health department, a number of tips have therefore been developed for parents:

  • In the case of children, pay special attention to protection with clothing and sunscreen!

Sunscreen is essential in strong sunshine – especially for children. Parents should make sure that it has a high sun protection factor and blocks both UVA and UVB rays. Do not forget to apply lotion on nose, ears, feet and shoulders: “This also applies when the sky is cloudy”. Parents of babies should consider that, according to the Federal Center for Health Education, sunscreen should not be used in the first year of life as it burdens the sensitive skin of young children unnecessarily.

“When it comes to clothes, parents should make sure that children always have something on their head,” says Juliane Böttcher, head of the health department in the city of Essen. A cap with neck protection and airy clothing is recommended.

  • Avoid direct sunlight for children!

As nice as it is in the sun, especially babies and young children under the age of three should not be in it at all, only in the shade. The same goes for: Do not forget a hat with neck protection and clothes with UV protection factor! In the pool or paddling pool, the little ones must wear a hat and t-shirt.

  • Protect children from the heat: drink a lot and it is often a must!

“In the summer, even small bodies need more fluid,” the city appeals. Water, unsweetened fruit tea or apple sprinkles are recommended for this. At temperatures of 30 degrees and more, the amount you drink should double or even triple.

  • If it is called, no heavy meals – ice cream is allowed

Especially when it is hot, children often have little or no appetite. According to experts, light meals such as salads, yogurts or quarks are therefore suitable as meals. Of course, ice can also be pressed in small children’s hands in the summer – but in moderation.

  • Don’t forget your afternoon nap!

Anyone who has planned strenuous activities should do so in the morning or in the evening. Direct sun should be avoided between kl. 11.00 and 16.00.

  • Never leave children alone in the car!

Tragedies keep happening because a car can turn into a heat trap within minutes. It underestimates parents sometimes. “Please take this warning seriously and never leave your children alone in the car – not even for a few minutes,” appealed Juliane Böttcher from Essen’s health department.

  • Valves only under supervision

If it is hot, it is recommended to ventilate in the morning. But it poses a risk: “Parents should always stay in the room with their children when they air. If you need to leave the room, close the window. It happens again and again that small children crawl out of the window and fall, ”explains Carsten Bluhm.

  • In case of sunburn: take the child out of the sun immediately

Despite all precautions, it can happen that children get sunburned. Now cool compresses, lukewarm showers and anti-inflammatory gels help. If a severe sunburn occurs with severe skin tension or fever, the following applies: immediately to the pediatrician!

  • Heating tips especially for babies

It is important for them to protect babies from the sun! The sensitive baby skin burns in the sun after just a few minutes.

In principle, babies who are still being breastfed do not need additional fluids. If it is particularly hot, the little ones must be breastfed much more often than usual. Strollers or buggies must be covered with UV-resistant cloths or awnings. Mothers or fathers who carry their child in a sling should also keep an umbrella.

In hot weather, babies should also be taken off their underwear or only sleep in the diaper. “If the body becomes too hot and can no longer give off enough heat through sweat, heat stroke occurs. This is extremely dangerous, especially for babies who are often dressed too warmly or lying in overheated cars. (alp)
