Andrea Nehmer-Rommel, head of the city library, borrowed a suitcase with ten tablets at the central library in Lüneburg – they serve as an introduction to the joy of reading. In her opinion, digital media and analogue books are no longer mutually exclusive. “Of course, we thought for a long time about whether and how we could organize reading promotion with tablets,” she says. In the end, she decided to do it, also because the digital world is now a part of everyday life for many boys and girls.

“For us, the project means a whole new territory that we look forward to,” says Nehmer-Rommel, whose information the playful use of apps and exploration of the library complement each other in each program item. To do so, she combed the shelves with children’s and youth literature, so she found a very special collection in her office.

This is what the program looks like

“Library fun with Fiete”: On Thursday 14 July, the boys and girls will go on a treasure hunt with adult companions from 11 am to 12 noon. First they solve the entertaining puzzles in the app, then the treasure hunt begins in the picture books in the right library. The offer is aimed at three- to five-year-olds.

“Monster etiquette”: Funny monsters with bad table manners await children between the ages of six and eight on Thursday 21 July from 11.00 to 12.00. But they can also rhyme and make some nonsense. They also invite visitors to find a suitable rhyme for their monsters – before the game continues. And, of course, they are also looking for monsters in the books.

“Chatter Pix”: Almost all children’s books have a hero or heroine. They will now be spoken to by children between the ages of nine and eleven on Thursday 28 July from 11 a.m. to noon. First, the participants photograph the heroes, then they lend them their votes thanks to an app. Whether Harry Potter, Yakari, the witch Lily or Superman – they are all there.

“How does the Z get into the chair?”: On Thursday 2 August, there will be a creative letter journey through the library from 11 am to 12.30 pm. Visitors look for letters from A to Z on walls and tables, on the floor or on doors, photograph them and then edit them in the app.

“Comic Heroes”: The series ends with the event on Thursday 9 August from 11.00 to 12.30. After getting to know the right app, ten- to twelve-year-olds make their own cartoon by photographing templates and filling out speech bubbles. Everyone can develop a personal photo story, which is presented at the end.

Participation in the tablet lessons is free, interested parties must register in advance by calling (05136) 3323 or by e-mail to

Library returns to everyday life

According to Nehmer-Rommel, with the beginning of the summer holidays, the library is once again experiencing increased demand – also because users are allowed to stay on the premises again and use the reading garden. Meanwhile, the mesh requirement and unidirectional adjustment have also been removed. “Some of those who came during the pandemic do not even know the original condition,” the director noted. Travel guides and books for vacations, whether abroad or at home, are currently in high demand.

Therefore, the facility also opens regularly during the holidays: Mondays, Tuesdays and Fridays at 12-18, Thursdays at 12-19 and the first Saturday of each month at 10-14. The library is closed on Wednesdays.
