Most parents in Lehrte send their children to high school
taught. Record at Gymnasium Lehrte: 197 children are enrolled in the new school year. “This is our highest number of registrations so far,” says school principal Silke Brandes. Last year, 189 fifth-graders started school. It shows that more than half of the new fifth-graders in Lehrte will probably be in high school.

The municipality’s administration cannot at present state how many children in Lehrte are changing from primary school to high school. Reliable figures are not available until the end of August. Usually there are more than 400 children, the city does not expect that now. “It’s a very weak vintage,” said city spokesman Fabian Nolting. At the beginning of the school year there were 373 fourth graders, these children are now going on to a secondary school. But there are also quite a few students whose families have just moved to Lehrte.
The high school starts in seven classes as in previous years. Repeaters do it almost like eight beats. “We are happy on the one hand, but it is also a challenge. Of course, we know that some students will probably have to fight, “says school principal Brandes. However, the school must maintain the high school’s performance level.

So far, 85 boys and girls have been enrolled at the Lehrte Integrated Comprehensive School (IGS). “There will be some more,” says school principal Bernhard Mellentin. Experience shows that not all parents meet the registration deadlines. Last year, 97 fifth-graders started at IGS.
After the summer holidays, IGS starts the fifth year with four classes. Mellentin does not expect it to remain so. Due to children switching to IGS during their school years, the current tenth year has grown from three to five classes with 123 students.
At Realschule Lehrte, 50 children are expected to start at 5th year plus seven students who will repeat the class. School principal Markus Böhm expects three classes, also because inclusion children are counted twice. Last year, there were about 80 fifth-graders divided into four classes.
Parents have registered 42 children at Hämelerwald Gymnasium, corresponding to last year. “It simply came to our notice then. It has turned out that there are still a few registrations, “says principal Katrin Telschow-Don. The high school, which was founded in 2018, is still under construction and usually starts with two classes of 5th year.

Striking: The children with special needs are very unequally distributed in the schools. Among the new fifth grades at Lehrte Gymnasium, there is only one inclusion child – even though the majority of the children go to Gymnasium.

In return, according to the current status, IGS Lehrte takes 14 children with special needs. Four inclusion children are registered at Lehrte High School and nine at Hämelerwald High School. “This varies a lot from year to year for us,” says school principal Telschow-Don.
According to the Education Act, all schools are basically inclusive and could therefore offer joint education for children with and without disabilities. Parents apparently see their child with special needs in better hands at some types of schools. Mellentin sees this as a “misguided development to the detriment of the holistic schools”, which must therefore tailor the teaching to other groups of students. However, the IGS chief emphasizes: “We can do it. Our high school students show that we are also successful in developing students in the upper achievement segment. “
