The 3D printer manufacturer EOS is collaborating with the software company Hyperganic to use algorithmic design to design space propulsion components.

Hyperganic aims to accelerate technical innovation with its Hyperganic Core software platform. The AI-powered software translates ideas into design in minutes, with the engineer delivering the rules and the computer generating the results. This algorithmic technique is now used in collaboration with EOS in the development of parts for aerospace.

Newly designed rocket engine

An example already exists: an Aerospike rocket engine. It was developed by Hyperganic and manufactured by EOS and AMCM, a company in the EOS Group. As EOS reports, an engine is traditionally considered a huge technical and production challenge.

Hyperganic built it from scratch as an algorithm-based model. One of the hundreds of designs that Hyperganic created in a matter of days was additively manufactured on an EOS M 400-4 system using laser beam fusing. Specifically, the very complex part was printed with the newly developed EOS NickelAlloy IN718 process and without any support structures.

Quick design adaptation to new material

The engine design was automatically adapted for production on a larger AMCM system for EOS CopperAlloy CuCrZr copper alloy.

In the next step, the design of the aerospike engine was automatically adapted for production on a much larger AMCM M 4K system from AMCM to the copper alloy EOS CopperAlloy CuCrZr. With this combination of design complexity and additive manufacturing, EOS intends to drive future innovations in space propulsion.

As an innovator, we are working with Hyperganic to introduce yet another paradigm shift in AM. This is especially true in the field of engineering and design and will expand both the solution possibilities and the performance of aerospace parts. At the same time, it will revolutionize the design process for AM and further digitize industrial 3D printing.

Tip: Algorithm-based engineering on design manager forum

Design Practice’s design manager forum aims to make design and development managers aware of the challenges of product development in the 21st century.

In step with customers’ increasing demands, it is important to develop products with an ever-increasing range of functions whose production and operation consume as little energy and material as possible. At the same time, development and production costs must be reduced. In addition, networking, digitization and formation of systems of systems, abbreviated SoS, ie systems that exchange information in networks and only in this way can new functions be implemented.

It is good that there are solutions to this. One of them is algorithmic construction, also known as generative construction. At the Design Manager Forum 2022, which takes place on 21 September in Würzburg, the young Bremen-based company Elise will present its eponymous solution for generative engineering.

Rethink product development

The key to a company’s success lies in design and development. This is where innovative products are created that ensure competitiveness. But do you know the challenges of product development in the 21st century?

The Design Manager Forum aims to sensitize design and development managers to obstacles and to show tools and methods to develop innovative ideas in a structured way and to make the product development process as sleek and efficient as possible.
