Everyone who has a cat knows that their urine has a very special scent. To be straightforward: it stinks. This is because bacteria convert urea and protein in the urine into pungent-smelling ammonia. The smell is usually easy to control: after all, cats are pure animals that usually use their litter box. And you can clean the toilet regularly.

But sometimes an accident happens to a cat. This happens from time to time, especially with young cats. From time to time, however, it can also be the case that older cats refuse to use their litter box. Then you should definitely clarify why that is. But first of all: act fast, otherwise there will be stains!

And above all, the smell should disappear again. The problem: Aggressive cleaners damage sensitive substances and surfaces. Fortunately, there are some home remedies that can help.

Cat urine: neutral homemade cleaners help against stains

If you have a wet urine stain, you can remove it in three steps:

  1. First, wipe the affected area dry with a handkerchief or kitchen paper. If the fabrics can be removed, pull them off and put them directly in the washing machine.
  2. Then clean the area with neutral soap – how to remove the urine from the fabric.
  3. Now you can neutralize the smell. For example, with homemade vinegar cleanser. For this you need vinegar and water – mix both in a ratio of 1: 2. First, treat the stain with neutral soap and then put the vinegar mixture on it. Let stand for ten minutes, wipe with water – done. Important: Try the vinegar mixture in a place that is as conspicuous as possible – the mixture may discolour substances.

There are other home remedies that can also help, such as baking soda and baking soda. Apply the powder on the stain and let it sit until dry. You can then simply wipe or vacuum the leavening agent away.

The smell of coffee removes unpleasant cat pee odors

A mouthwash also helps against the smell. Dilute this in the ratio 1: 1 with water and dab the mixture on the affected area. NOTE: Using colored mouthwash may leave stains on light fabrics! It is therefore better to use clear mouthwash.

You probably know this trick from the kitchen: If the refrigerator smells bad, you can put a bowl of ground coffee in it. The trick also works on the smell of cat urine. First clean the affected area with neutral soap. Then put the powder on the spot and let it dry. Then you can just suck it up. Important: The powder may leave stains on light fabrics, so use only on dark fabrics.

If you are reluctant to use household remedies to tackle your cat’s pee stains, there are also products in pet stores and specialty stores that also remove urine odor. On the one hand, the products bind the smell, and on the other hand, they contain scents that also mask it.

You can also find deodorants in pharmacies. When buying, make sure that the Doppler effect, ie. neutralizing and comprehensive, always offered. The reason: Cats smell their urine. Therefore, it may happen that they again use this particular place as a toilet.

Therefore, you should not use any cleaners that contain ammonia – it is also found in cat urine and can also make your velvet paw pee in this place again in the future.
