Participation campaign: Libraries in Teltow-Fläming want to motivate children to read
Teltow-Fläming. In the Blankenfelde-Mahlow community library, children are already staring with wide eyes at the new books on the shelves. These are still cordoned off with warning tapes, because they will not be able to read the brand new books until the Brandenburg Reading Summer campaign has started. “One or the other could not wait and tried to borrow one of the books,” says librarian Sabine Zielsdorf, who organizes the campaign in Blankenfelde-Mahlow. And adds: “But without success.” The books will not be activated until at the lending machines on Wednesday 6 July.

Between 300 and 500 new books
The community library has acquired around 500 new children’s and young people’s books for the reading summer. The principle behind the campaign is simple: Children should read as many new books as possible during the summer holidays. Those who have completed at least three will receive a certificate eventually. There is also a challenge trophy that goes to the school class whose students have read the most books overall.

With the Brandenburg Reading Summer, libraries will encourage children to read more again. Interested parties should contact their home library directly to hear exactly how the campaign takes place at the individual libraries and who can participate. Like last year, five libraries from Teltow-Fläming are participating this year: Blankenfelde-Mahlow, Rangsdorf, Großbeeren, Zossen and Jüterbog.
Libraries want to make reading fun
During the year, the participating libraries look for new books that the children would like. “Children’s tastes are very diverse, you can’t really say what works best,” says Daniela Scholz, head of the Großbeeren library. Comics and graphic novels, for example, are very popular at the moment.
The children must tell the staff about the contents of the books they have read over the summer – only then is there a stamp in the reading card. “Some start talking right away, others need to be encouraged first,” says Petra Siegert from Rangsdorf. “It’s also always interesting to hear what the children are saying – often each child finds something else exciting and important.”
Sign up for Family Compass 2022
The Family Compass is a nationwide survey on child and family friendliness in Brandenburg. It is a joint project of Märkische Allgemeine, Lausitzer Rundschau and Märkische Oderzeitung.
The survey is anonymous and takes place exclusively on the Internet. You can find the questionnaire below www.maz-online.de/familien. Anyone over the age of 18 can participate. The survey runs until early July. The data is collected anonymously. We will then present the results this fall in MAZ.
With each questionnaire you answer, you are helping to improve the family and child friendliness of your residence. After the evaluation, we enter into a dialogue with the politicians and report in detail – also to point out possible deficits.
Among all participants we are giving away a Baltic family holiday worth up to € 1,300 and many other great prizes.

The librarians really don’t care how much the kids end up reading. “For some, two books are already a success, others read more than 30,” Scholz says. Siegert adds: “It’s not about the number, it’s about the joy of reading. It should be fun and not mandatory.”
The Brandenburg summer of reading begins on different days in the participating libraries. Large berries start on July 4th. Blankenfelde-Mahlow, Rangsdorf, Zossen and Jüterbog begin on 6 July.
