City of Wolfsburg celebrates itself as charging station master – but is that true?
Wolfsburg. The city of Wolfsburg is a frontrunner when it comes to charging stations. At second glance, however, the underlying location also reveals weaknesses.

Great joy for the city administration: Wolfsburg takes first place in a nationwide e-charging station ranking of the German Automobile Industry Association (VDA), the city reports. Therefore, there are about 1,000 publicly available e-charging stations for about 123,000 cars registered in Wolfsburg. In the town on the Mittelland Canal, 122 cars share a charging station, including cars with internal combustion engines.
Confused model calculation
The strange thing here is that the ranking also includes cars with internal combustion engines, so it assumes that they would use the public charging stations. Does it make sense? From the city’s side, “requirements for reorganization of the number of registrations from internal combustion engines for electric cars” can be read from this. And these are especially good in Wolfsburg.

The city shares the top positions, for example, with the Groß-Gerau district in second place, where 183 cars come to a charging station. In the town of Heilbronn, in fourth place, there are 200 cars per. column, in the town of Emden, in sixth place, there are 218.

Second location without internal combustion engine
It is interesting to compare this ranking with another ranking from the VDA. Here, all registered e-vehicles in a district or city are compared with the number of publicly available charging stations – ie without incineration vehicles.
At second glance, the charging network is significantly worse
The district of Groß-Gerau is in first place, the city of Emden is in second place and the city of Heilbronn is in third place. The naked truth of Wolfsburg without internal combustion engines: 19th place with about 9,700 electric cars and about 1,000 charging points. About ten electric cars share a public charging station, in Groß Gerau for example. with five.

Wolfsburg: many e-cars in a small area
Another crucial difference for Groß Gerau: The electric vehicles are far from in as small a space as in Wolfsburg. There are about 4,000 registered electric cars on the 453 square kilometers of the district. In Wolfsburg, about 10,000 e-cars travel around an area of 204 square kilometers.

Dennis Weilmann: “Wolfsburg are on the right track”
Wolfsburg Mayor Dennis Weilmann confirms: “The city addressed the issue very early on and developed its own strategy.” “I’m glad Wolfsburg are still on track to expand electromobility.” Nevertheless, when it came to the ratio of e-vehicles to charging stations, Wolfsburg was still in 72nd place out of 399 in October last year – the city has therefore improved significantly.

VDA criticizes slow expansion
Hildegard Müller, President of the Association of the Automotive Industry: “The federal government’s target of 15 million electric vehicles by 2030 has further increased the need for an ambitious expansion of charging infrastructure.” Nevertheless, enlargement is progressing far too slowly. The development of the electricity grids required for electromobility must also be better coordinated. “We need a lot more speed if we want to reach the goals.”
