Sonoro PLATINUM SE convinces with design and technology – the vinyl list

Enwie Kej – Today, the turntable PLATINUM SE from Neuss’ sound factory SONORO found its way to our editorial office. The company started, among other things, for uncompromising advocacy for quality, functionality and design. We are very excited to see how PLATINUM SE will do.

packing and assembly

PLATINUM SE is available in black and white, the courier brings the black version to us. The package apparently received a serious blow during shipment, but the contents are undamaged thanks to the solid packaging. All components are neatly individually wrapped, often in plastic – also the instructions for use.

The construction is mostly intuitive, only for the slightly difficult installation of the resistant acrylic cap, we prefer to look at the operating instructions so as not to cause damage. Finger strength and sensitivity are just as important for clipping in the hood hinges. After 15 minutes, the device is set up and connected to our system.

material and feeling

Overall, the turntable looks very nice. It’s a matter of taste, but we have nothing to complain about in terms of design. The heavy aluminum turntable and the matt black lacquered housing create a very valuable and elegant impression. And the cork cover for the turntable not only looks good, but is also practical in relation to unwanted charges or vibrations. The only slight downside is the cheap plastic puck.

PLATINUM SE offers various connection options to the user’s existing system. It does not matter if it is classic via chinch, USB or even Bluetooth, the connection must work in one of these ways. We were able to test all three options successfully and without problems. We were surprised by the good quality via Bluetooth. Vinyls can be digitized from the uncompressed transmitted signal via the connection to the home PC. We like that no internal software is required here, but that standard software is used.

There is of course a speed controller for 33/45 rpm. A separate power switch is also included, allowing the player to be completely disconnected from the power supply. However, this is installed quite inconveniently on the back of the device. In our opinion, this should be more user-friendly and easily accessible.

PLATINUM SE is a manual, belt-driven turntable with a DC motor. The Nagaoka MP-110 pickup with elliptical needle cut including headshell delivers a balanced sound. Thanks to the standard bayonet connection, this can be easily replaced if needed. The integrated preamplifier, which can be turned on or off as needed, is very advantageous. The use of a phono input including an existing preamplifier in existing systems is possible without problems, but not necessary.

PLATINUM SE is a turntable that is successful in terms of quality and design. We especially like the high-quality design, the high-quality pickup that is included in the scope of delivery, the various connection options and the possibility to use the preamplifier.

On the other hand, there is the inconveniently located circuit breaker. The plastic puck is insignificant to us. It would be nice if Sonoro could optimize the good packaging concept in the direction of plastic savings.

PLATINUM SE will be available for a suggested retail price of 799 EUR offered. Overall, we rate the device with a strong 4 out of 5 stars.
