Plot: What is the series “The Swarm” about?

Surrealistic events pile up all over the globe. Whales change their behavior and try to capsize ships. A new ice worm threatens to destroy the continental slopes and bring devastating tsunamis to the mainland. And a deadly pathogen spreads through drinking water. Now it’s up to a team of renowned scientists to save the earth from a cool dystopia. To do this, they go into the eternal ice. Can they avert the ecological catastrophe, or has the unknown species in the depths of the sea already sealed the fate of mankind?

We will probably not get the answer until “Der Schwarm” is broadcast on ZDF in the spring of 2023. If you do not want to wait that long, you can alternatively use Frank Schätzing’s novel. At this point, however, it should be pointed out that one can expect some changes in the adaptation of the series. Showrunner Frank Doelger modified and modernized the plot a bit with the help of author Frank Schätzing.

Among others Prof. Dr. Antje Boetius from the Alfred Wegener Institute, who as a deep-sea researcher and consultant has high hopes for the series:

“Now it’s more urgent than ever to take a look, to deal with our relationship to the sea. Fictional storytelling and the film’s visual power to put us in the sea’s perspective, to show heroes protecting the oceans, this opens up new spaces for reflection . “
