The light of hope: With the money from the Nürtinger und Wendlinger Zeitung’s fundraising campaign, the recipient Birgit Zimmermann near Eldoret in Kenya can pay the extra school fees for 110 children.
RECOMMEND. Birgit Zimmermann, who previously lived in Bempflingen and worked as an educator, has been in Kenya more often since 2004 than in her original homeland. “On average, I am in Germany six weeks a year and in Kenya for ten and a half months,” says the 51-year-old. “I like being in Germany, but I also like returning to my Kenyan homeland.” She spent the last few days with her parents in Bempflingen. She leaves again on Pentecost and will probably not return until mid-February. She will then meet many happy children at the Badilisha Maisha Center (BMC) in Outspan-Sinendet near Eldoret – 360 kilometers and six and a half hours drive from Nairobi. For thanks to the generous willingness of readers of the Nürtinger und Wendlinger Zeitung to donate in the last few months, the Bempflinger association Eldoret Kids Kenya has been able to support 70 street children between the ages of seven and 21, who are under BMC’s umbrella . for several months to fund schooling. An additional 40 children from the area can also be supported. “This year we need about 20,000 euros more than before,” Birgit Zimmermann points to the increased costs – primarily, but not only, for tuition fees. Because the Kenyan state has introduced an extra fourth school period to provide the children with the schooling that was lacking due to the school closures after Corona. Prices are also rising for childcare and food. That is why she is also extremely grateful to the newspaper readers for the donations: “It is a huge gift. Without the support from home, we would not be able to help many more. ”
