New Omirkon variant casts shadows ahead – SWR Current

Will there be mask requirements again in the autumn, access restrictions and the like? The federal and state governments are preparing for a new corona wave in the late year.

A new subspecies of coronavirus has spread since early May: Omicron BA.5. In Portugal, the new variant is already causing an increasing number of infections. In Baden-Württemberg, the spread has so far been limited. In the last three weeks, the number of infections with Omikron BA.5 has remained in the double-digit range, according to the Baden-Württemberg Ministry of Health on questions from the SWR.

It is difficult to predict the further course of the pandemic, but the ministry will prepare for a possible new corona wave.

Are there new corona initiatives this fall?

The ministry is planning an expert hearing in July. It should also be about suitable vaccines and who should be vaccinated again.

According to the ministry, a decision must be made at the federal level as to whether measures such as making masks mandatory in the autumn are possible again.

A new corona wave could threaten in the fall. A meeting between the prime ministers was therefore about an anti-corona plan. The federal states see the federal government as responsible for this …

Discussion on how to proceed in the pandemic at the federal state meeting

At the meeting between the Prime Ministers of the Federal States with Chancellor Olaf Scholz (SPD) on Thursday, the Federal States already spoke in favor of the Federal Government preparing appropriate protection measures. The state health ministers had already listed possible measures in a unanimous decision.

From the autumn, for example, a mask requirement could be responded to indoors. In addition, there could again be 2G or 3G access rules with evidence of vaccination, improvement or testing for certain facilities.

The relationship between the federal and state governments is not easy. Baden-Württemberg’s Prime Minister Winfried Kretschmann made the following statement at the Prime Minister’s Conference:

Preparations for a possible new corona wave

The chairman of the Prime Minister’s Conference (MPK), Prime Minister of North Rhine-Westphalia Hendrik Wüst (CDU), said after the meeting:

“We all do not want more back and forth between lockdowns and easing that we have seen before.”

Lauterbach is planning precautions

Federal Health Minister Karl Lauterbach (SPD) is already planning comprehensive measures for a corona situation that is likely to become more tense after the summer. “We must not go unprepared into the crisis, as we did last autumn,” the SPD politician said in the Bundestag.

In addition to changes in the Infection Control Act, it included concepts for vaccinations and tests, more accurate data on the burden on clinics, better protection of risk groups, for example in nursing homes. The vaccination concept provides that there is the right vaccine for all virus variants that could come. The state health ministers had unanimously put together a possible catalog of mask requirements indoors and access rules like 2G and 3G (access for vaccinated, recovered or tested only).

The State Parents’ Council does not see schools prepared for the new Corona wave

The chairman of the Baden-Württemberg State Parents’ Advisory Council, Michael Mittelstaedt, is concerned about a new wave of corona. The schools in the country are not prepared for that. “The fact is that no preventive measures were actually taken at all,” Mittelstaedt told SWR.

He is convinced that Chancellor Scholz’s meeting with the Prime Ministers will not bring any significant progress in the preparations for another wave of corona.
