Subscriptions, children, bicycles: nine-euro ticket in Berlin and Brandenburg – what you need to know now – Berlin

The nine-euro ticket also starts in Berlin and Brandenburg on Wednesday, after the Bundesrat paved the way for it and approved the tariff model planned by the federal government in the middle of the month.

With the so-called nine-euro ticket, local public transport can be used throughout Germany at greatly reduced costs. The ticket was to be valid from June to August – for nine euros for each of these three months. The most important information in an instant.

When and where the nine euro ticket is valid

The tickets must be valid for all German local and regional transport – without exception in 2nd class and not for long-distance transport, ie not in ICE, IC, RJ and ECE trains. According to VBB, Flixbus and Flixtrain are also not included, nor are they special services unless their operators state otherwise. Also important: The ticket is valid strictly after calendar months – as opposed to the usual flexible monthly tickets.

When and where the ticket is sold

The special offer is available on all machines in the VBB area as well as customer centers and at BVG and S-Bahn counters.

Where – as at some Brandenburg train stations – machines or counters are not available, the special tickets must be sold on the VBB trains. The same applies to buses, but not explicitly to BVG’s.

The nine-euro ticket can also be booked using popular apps such as VBB Bus & Bahn, BVG and DB Navigator. In any case, the tickets are personal, ie. non-transferable. As always, children under the age of six travel for free. And since the promotion is limited to the three calendar months, the tickets end automatically without resulting in a subscription.

What applies to regular customers

Anyone who has a subscription to a transport company from VBB does not have to do anything: the monthly amount charged is automatically reduced to nine euros. According to VBB, this applies not only to environmental cards, but also to student and trainee tickets (which are still free in Berlin), company tickets and the VBB subscription 65plus and 65vorOrt.

The rules attached to the respective tickets, such as taking bikes with you, apply as usual – but only to these customers, not to the nine-euro ticket in general. VBB-FahrCard must be recognized nationwide in local and regional transport.

Currently popular with Tagesspiegel Plus:

Holders of semester tickets will also benefit from the nine-euro ticket. As VBB clarified, they can also use local public transport nationwide with the ticket. There should also be a pro rata refund for contributions already paid. The respective university administrations have more information about this.

The person who has purchased the tokens for the annual ticket in advance must take care of it: The Swedish Transport Association asks these customers to use the corresponding sections on an ongoing basis and subsequently submit them to the respective transport company for reimbursement. Anyone who has purchased a sliding season pass in the month of May, which is valid into June, will not receive a proportionate refund.

In Berlin, the Senate recently considered introducing a zero-euro ticket in the AB tariff zone for subscribers during the campaign months. However, this failed due to many necessary agreements with the transport companies in Berlin and the transport association Berlin-Brandenburg.

What is happening and where is the problem

The transport companies do not have large reserves to increase their offers. So there will be a lot of congestion on many routes. So full that VBB recommends, as a safety precaution, not to take your own bike with you, but to rent one at your destination. It also recommends “traveling outside of rush hour”.

In Berlin, due to the expected increase in demand, more trips are offered on some routes – especially during rush hour. You can read here which subways, suburban trains, buses and trams are affected.

In addition to the predictable lack of supply, there are some construction sites that were deliberately put into the summer holidays well in advance and can no longer be adjusted, as they say. VBB therefore asks for flexibility – and to find out about travel routes in advance. The planned construction work is stored at the information points and in timetable apps at VBB and transport companies. In view of the foreseeable need for information on the subject, the transport association has put a portal online with further details.
