Is it still worth buying in 2022?

Usually we will first mention all the advantages and disadvantages of the smartphone in question compared to current models – be it the technology or the software. Next, it would be the turn of a price-performance analysis, and only then would we formulate the verdict. In this case, however, we would make an exception and anticipate the conclusion right at the beginning: No, it is definitely not worth buying a Samsung Galaxy A50 in 2022! And this despite the fact that the model was the most popular in our database for almost a year. But why the result became so one-sided must be explained in more detail.

Samsung Galaxy A50: This is the hardware

The reason for the success of Samsung’s A-Series is a technically comprehensive overall package combined with a good price. In this specific case, technically comprehensive means that the mobile phone has a 6.4 inch Full HD screen (1,080 x 2,340 pixels, Super AMOLED) with a good screen-to-house ratio. The Galaxy A50 does not offer an IP certification, but it runs with the rather fast mid-range Exynos 9610 chip, which is equipped with eight cores and has a clock frequency of up to 2.3 GHz. The processor is supported by 4 GB of RAM, while the main memory is 128 GB.

In addition, there is a 4,000 mAh battery, which is at most walkable from today’s perspective. The fingerprint sensor is integrated in the display and support for all common transmission formats, with the exception of the new and not yet widespread 5G and Wi-Fi 6 (ax) standards, is also guaranteed. Last but not least, there is the triple main camera, whose modules have a resolution of 25 megapixels, 5 megapixels and 8 megapixels (aperture: f / 1.7, f / 2.2 and f / 2.2). Samsung also installed a 25-megapixel front camera with an f / 2.0 aperture for selfie fans. The bottom line is that the Samsung Galaxy A50 offers everything a not too demanding heart desires. But that also applies to the current successor model, the Galaxy A52s 5G. And here the technology is also much better.

Galaxy A50 vs Galaxy A52s

The two 50s smartphones are basically similar to each other. Both are similar in size, both offer a similar resolution and both have the same memory equipment (at least in the cheaper variant). But then there is the processor where the Galaxy A52s has been upgraded to Qualcomm Snapdragon 778G. The newer model with its 6 GB is also much better in terms of RAM and in terms of connectivity, the Galaxy A52S can even excel with the 5G transmission standard. Then there is the battery capacity of 4,500 mAh compared to 4,000 mAh on the Samsung Galaxy A50 and a 64-megapixel main camera.

Software for Samsung Galaxy A50

Now for the software: When the Samsung Galaxy A50 hit the market, it ran with the then current Google operating system Android 9 Pie. Since then, the device has been updated first to Android 10 and later even to Android 11. However, another version update will not follow. And the situation around security updates is also a bit difficult. Because Samsung donated several smartphones – including the Galaxy A50 – security updates for a full four years. Nevertheless, the device, apart from the Enterprise version, has already been removed from Samsung’s update list. The new Samsung Galaxy A52s, on the other hand, was already launched with Android 11. Users can look forward to further version updates here.

Price performance

The key to success with Samsung’s A-Series is value for money. Therefore, the Galaxy A50 only cost around 350 euros when it was launched. Since then, the device has of course also been exposed to the typical Android price drop, but after some successor models came on the market, the price rose again – to a current value of around 280 euros. Meanwhile, the Samsung Galaxy A52s initially cost just under 450 euros. At the moment, however, the device can be purchased from well-known dealers from around 250 euros. This makes the device a significantly better alternative in terms of value for money.

If you can and want to dig a little deeper into your pocket, it may also pay to grab the newer Samsung Galaxy A53 5G. For just over 325 euros, buyers get a 5,000 mAh battery and a little more power (Samsung Exynos 1280 chip).

The bottom line is that the Galaxy A52s are not only significantly newer but also more powerful. The price-performance ratio is also much better here. Buying an inferior and at the same time more expensive A50 model would therefore be completely pointless. Unless you absolutely value an aperture that is as bright as possible (f / 1.7 compared to f / 1.8).
