Shooting in American Elementary School: How Many More Children Should Die? | BR cultural scene

The arms industry’s solution: More weapons!

The background is still not quite clear. One thing is for sure: everyone will express their sympathy. Say something about the incomprehensible. The facts are pretty obvious: there are 300 million guns in circulation in the United States. Weapons designed to kill people. The two automatic rifles that the 18-year-old Uvalde killer should have carried are actually designed to kill as many people as possible as quickly as possible.

The arms industry – a thriving business in the United States and a powerful lobbying organization – will once again declare: It is not the gun that kills, but the perpetrator that hits the trigger. She will demand tighter security measures in schools and armament of teaching staff. In other words, measures that increase their sales and bring even more weapons into circulation. Maybe also mandatory target practice? A whole new pedagogical requirement: the will and ability to purposefully kill a human being.

The arms lobby is wielding massive influence

It does not sound obscene, it is. So did the crocodile tears from the conservative rep. Ted Cruz, who tweeted that he was praying for the victims and their families. What he did not write: He is one of the MPs who is massively supported by the arms lobby. In 2016 alone, he received over $ 360,000 from gun rights groups such as the National Rifle Association (NRA). And by the way: Maybe he should read a little in the Bible after praying. It is very clear: He who takes the sword will perish by the sword. But Christians like Ted Cruz are perfectly trained to read their scriptures very selectively.

Heidi & I heartily lift children and families up in the horrific shooting in Uvalde. We are in close contact with local officials, but the exact details are still unfolding. Thanks to heroic law enforcement & first aiders for acting so quickly.

mythologization of the weapon

How many more children will have to die for that to change? The terrible thing – the end is unpredictable. Author Richard Price, who was involved in the series “The Wire”, wrote more than 20 years ago that the United States was waging a civil war in its own country that they did not want to see. This blindness is no coincidence. It is driven by economic interests and backed by an archaic, often evangelical Christianity that seems to be preparing every hour for the last days. Conservatives would still like to point out that it was weapons that liberated the country from foreign domination 250 years ago. So almost yesterday. Therefore, anyone in the United States with a gun in his hand can still feel like a defender of democracy and independence from the English crown. This mythologization of the weapon explains the special role of the United States. There are also many weapons in Switzerland because army reservists take their weapons home with them. Nevertheless, Switzerland is not a hotbed of vandalism.

In order for them to become a status symbol and masculinity fetish – and in extreme cases the murder weapon of a gunman, weapons need a (non-) killing culture. It also needs a framing, a perception that weapons are a solution. Eye to eye. Ball around / against ball. My home, my defense. And it needs everyday life to kill. Encouraged by the Old Testament presence of evil that can not be let go. Against which no poverty reduction or strict gun laws would help.

The United States Civil War is not a silent civil war. Children die. The most important news opens with the bloody pictures. No, people are not tired. People are ideologized. And until that happens, the killing will not stop.
