Robert Koch Institute: Currently more flu than corona in children

Status: 20/05/2022 07:12

With summer temperatures in Germany, the number of corona infections is declining. Children are currently more likely to be infected with another respiratory disease that the Robert Koch Institute has found.

According to the Robert Koch Institute, children are currently diagnosed with the flu more often than a corona virus infection. The institute writes in its weekly report published on Thursday evening that especially 5-14-year-olds are affected. RKI is dependent on results from virological monitoring.

“If symptoms of a new respiratory disease occur, such as runny nose, sore throat or cough, it is strongly recommended – regardless of vaccination status and also in case of a negative Covid-19 test result – to avoid contact and, if necessary, contact your family doctor. practice, ”it said.

Experts are currently talking about a slight increase in flu activity in Germany, which means that although a slightly increasing number of cases of influenza have recently been diagnosed, according to scientific definition, a flu epidemic has not even started in the 2021/22 season. The Influenza Working Group had reported nearly 2,000 cases in the past week. In the case of influenza, a high number of undetected and unreported cases are assumed.

Corona numbers are falling, but are not very meaningful

Regarding the development of the corona pandemic, RKI notes that the seven-day incidence has fallen further in the past week – by 13.5 percent compared to the week before. Many indicators of hospitalizations and deaths continue to decline. Nevertheless: “The infection pressure remains high with about 400,000 Covid 19 cases transferred to RKI within the last week,” RKI said.

The seven-day incidence is 361.8

The nationwide seven-day incidence dropped to 361.8 on Friday. The day before, the value of new infections per 100,000 inhabitants and week 383.2 (previous week: 485.7; last month: 688.3). However, the occurrence does not give a complete picture of the infection situation. Experts have for some time assumed that there will be a large number of cases that are not registered by RKI – due to overworked health authorities, and because not all infected people get a PCR test done. Only these count in the statistics. In addition, late registrations or transmission problems can lead to a distortion of individual fair values.

Within a day, the health authorities in Germany reported 48,910 new corona infections to RKI (last week: 68,999 registered infections) and 151 deaths (previous week: 164). Here, too, comparisons of data are possible only to a limited extent due to test behavior, late registrations, or transmission problems. In general, the number of registered new infections and deaths varies significantly from weekday to weekday, as more and more states do not send to RKI, especially on weekends, and report their cases later in the week.

Spread of virus variants

According to the weekly RKI report, the omicron variant BA.2 is still prevalent in Germany. However, their share fell slightly to 97.4 percent. On the other hand, the share of the omicron subvariant BA.5 grew, but so far at a very low level. That was 1.4 percent, according to the latest available data, a sample from last week. In the weeks before, it was 0.5 and 0.3 per cent.

“The current rising trend in Omicron lines BA.4 and BA.5, particularly in South Africa and more recently also in Portugal, is accompanied by an increase in the number of Covid 19 cases and the positive rate,” writes RKI. In Germany, so far there has been only a very small increase in BA.4, from 0.1 to 0.3 percent. According to the report, there has also been no sharp increase in mixed varieties. However, not all positive samples are examined accordingly.
