Excursion destination in Dortmund for children: The town in the Ruhr region is home to a zoo, museum and nature

For many, the best destinations for children are the Dortmund Zoo, Westfalenpark and the Hohensyburg nature scene. But the town in the Ruhr area has much more to offer: swimming pools, ice skating rinks and climbing halls are just a few examples that you can find among our suggestions for an exciting excursion with children.

Westfalen Park: The extensive park in the south of Dortmund has a lot to offer in addition to a few playgrounds and an adventure trail where children can let off the steam on giant wheels and sharpen their senses on sensory walls: How about a trip to the Florian Tower or Mondo Children’s Museum millions? If the distances in Westfalenparken are too far for you, you can whiz through the park in the airy heights with the cable car or take the small train.

Lake Phoenix: There is a 3 km long path around the artificial lake, which can be explored on foot, by bike or with inline skates and skateboards. There are also three playgrounds with long slides, nest swings and lots of sand for play around Phoenix Lake.

Dortmund Zoo: There is no doubt that once the animals at Dortmund Zoo have had offspring, a visit to the great zoo is worth more than ever. But the Dortmund Zoo is also an absolute highlight among the excursion destinations in the Ruhr area. There are about 220 animal species to be discovered, including kangaroos, giraffes, rhinos and flamingos. Children can even touch and feed the animals in the children’s zoo.

Dortmund: The most beautiful excursion destinations with children – from giant tipi to brine pool

Fredenbaum Park: Another large park in Dortmund, which offers plenty of space to frolic and climb on 63 hectares and several playgrounds. “Big Tipi”, a giant Native American tent, is particularly exciting, and from April you can climb to your heart’s content in its high ropes course. Other highlights: the circular course, which is ideal for rollerblading, and the mini golf courses.

nature reserves: Dortmund is surrounded by several nature reserves that offer all children a true nature experience. Whether it’s a trip to the Bolmke nature reserve close to the city center, to Bittermark or to the Dorneywald – between tall beech trees and noisy streams, children will find plenty of exciting things to discover at any time of the year. The Association for Environment and Nature Protection (BUND) offers an overview of all nature reserves in Dortmund.

Rhinos also live in Dortmund Zoo.

Revierpark and leisure pool in Wischlingen: Also in Revierpark Wischlingen, several playgrounds invite you to play and large meadows for picnics and linger. If that’s not enough for you, you can also visit the Tree2Tree high ropes course at this excursion destination, skate in the ice rink or swim in the brine pool in Wischlingen.

Excursions in Dortmund with children: Meet Emma at BVB stadium or real bees in Rombergpark

Signal Iduna Park: Experience Emma live once! Or watch BVB on the field! Whether it’s in the fan shop or on a stadium tour – in Signal Iduna Park, children can experience BVB’s home live.

football museum: Do you want more football? In the German Football Museum right next to Dortmund’s main railway station, all visitors travel through the history of football. Memories of goosebumps moments for the adults can not be ruled out. From the World Cup in Germany to the history of the Bundesliga – children can immerse themselves completely in the world of football here.

Romberg Park Botanical Garden: Exotic plants, medicinal herbs and an educational apiary – there is a lot for nature lovers to experience in the botanical garden. It is especially exciting for smaller children to see bees flying in and out of their hives. If that is not expensive enough for you, you can take a trip to the nearby zoo.

Dortmund: Excursion destinations for children Dortmund – families never get bored in the Ruhr area

Hohensyburg: The ruins of Hohensyburg alone set in motion the imagination of children, who quickly become knights and robbers in the old castle. If you want to experience even more drama, you can see plays and musicals in the open air on the Hohensyburg nature stage.

Climbing in the gym: On the 2,500 square meter climbing wall, not only children but also great climbers get their money’s worth. If you do not want to climb a rope, try the bouldering area and climb unsecured on low walls. However, children who want to climb themselves must be a little older. The climbing courses start at the age of six.

nature museum: Dinosaurs as tall as a skyscraper. Stone Age people to take selfies with. And a room filled with glittering (semi-) gemstones. In the Dortmund Natural History Museum, children can not help but be amazed. In addition, there are all sorts of things worth knowing to learn on the three exhibition floors.

And there are other great destinations to discover, such as the Zollern Kulleriet, the Hansa coke plant, DASA or the adventure scene in the Rodenberg building. The Schultenhof fairytale farm or the Schulte-Tigges educational farm are also worth a visit, as are the fairytale playgrounds in Scharnhorst or Westpark. Note: In Dortmund, the range of excursion destinations for children is almost unlimited.
