Xiaomi 12 Ultra: Does this image confirm the curious camera design?

Xiaomi 12 Ultra is eagerly awaited by many ambitious smartphone photographers due to its supposed camera features. Now another interesting picture has emerged, which could confirm the final camera design of the Ultra model – to the annoyance of some fans.

Since the release of the Xiaomi 12 (here with a contract), fans of the Chinese smartphone maker have been waiting for what feels like a lost ultra model from Xiaomi’s current top smartphone series. In recent months, tracks have appeared again and again. Now circulating an image of a smartphone case that is said to have been produced for the Xiaomi 12 Ultra. The shape of the case again confirms a striking round camera design. However, the many excerpts raise questions.

Xiaomi 12 Ultra: actually with a round “monster camera”?

Leaker Slashleaks, active on Twitter, recently posted the above photo of the aforementioned smartphone cover. According to the doctor, this image should show the final design of the Xiaomi 12 Ultra. Not all users should like this view. Already the monstrous camera element from its predecessor split the online community. In addition to the circular elevation of the camera element, we see a total of eight recesses indicating a large number of sensors. This vision alone should trigger mild trypophobia (anxiety about gaps) in some users.

An actively usable camera sensor probably takes place behind very few of these holes. Based on previous leaks about the Xiaomi 12 Ultra camera, we currently assume that the manufacturer will stick to a triple setup optimized in collaboration with Leica. The previous model – Xiaomi Mi 11 Ultra (here in the test) – relied on a combination of main, ultra-wide-angle and periscope telecamera. If you take a closer look, you will also see a letter announcing once again a 120x zoom. We also know this feature from the predecessor. On the main camera, on the other hand, we could see a high-resolution 200 MP sensor instead of a 50 MP variant.

Supports sensors instead of active cameras

If Xiaomi actually stays with three cameras, the remaining holes are likely to support sensors. In addition to the flash, a laser autofocus, and a flight time sensor for depth information, Xiaomi could add additional help. For example, Honor Magic4 Pro uses a flicker sensor to reduce flicker during shooting. A LiDAR sensor as we know it from iPhones was also conceivable. If the company decides on another usable camera, an extra telephoto lens is likely. Samsung also uses two zoom lenses for the Galaxy S22 Ultra (here in the test).

Twitter user Devinarde responded to the Slashleaks posting, claiming that the cover photos circulating on Weibo were his own and allegedly owned for several months. In fact, we see several cases on his Twitter timeline that have the same design. We therefore remain skeptical until the official announcement of the smartphone. However, a deviation from the old Ultra design becomes more likely for each leak of a round camera element. There is currently no date for the official presentation.
