May is considered the month of bliss – we want in our special to clarify whether AMD’s new graphics card is also a bliss and combine this with graphics card purchase advice. But what is it about? On Tuesday, AMD released three new graphics card series, namely the update of the Radeon RX 6600 XT, RX 6700 XT and RX 6900 XT. The three new series are identified by the number 5 in the third digit of the model number – ie 6650, 6750 and 6950. Of all three new series, there are currently model variants available from stock from at least six different partner manufacturers on the market, of which we also want 13 later Summarizes examples in a table.
Today we also look at the technology in the new graphics cards and want to determine their performance by comparing several tests published by specialized editors since Tuesday in our own analysis. So we can present you with a good overview of the gaming performance. When it comes to the question of how valuable the new models are, price obviously plays an important role. After the performance evaluation, there is also a price-performance analysis, where we include all graphics cards from the AMD 6000 and Nvidia 3000 series and therefore can give a general buy recommendation.
The new AMD series RX 6650 XT, RX 6750 XT and RX 6950 XT cover the price ranges from around 450 to 1300 euros and also measure up to their AMD predecessors, of which the RX 6600 XT is available from 420 euros with many Nvidia model series. But first, it’s about the technology for the AMD update.
AMD RX 6000 update: Tech
On the technical side, there are no surprises or special innovations with the new AMD graphics cards. Unlike the Ryzen update (Ryzen 7 5800X3D as a refresh of the normal Ryzen 7 5800X, see our special from April), there are no new architectural changes worth mentioning.
Still, AMD gets more performance from the three new graphics cards, which have a slightly higher TDP than the old base models. So for an improvement in efficiency, the percentage increase in performance must be at least as high as the relative increase in TDP, even if TDP does not exactly match the power requirement. But we come to the power demand after the performance analysis.
What methods does AMD use to increase performance if it’s not an architectural change? A plus in computer or shader devices is also not the method chosen. AMD, on the other hand, calculates performance plus through higher clock rates and faster RAM, which in combination with small changes in the graphics card’s design can apparently be implemented without other drawbacks apart from the power requirement.
In the following table you can see the technical data for the new AMD series compared to their base variants including TDP or the power consumption specified by AMD:

To get a better overview, we have left a space between each of the three pairs (basic and update version). The percentage value in the “Additional power consumption” column shows you the plus of the update card compared to the base version – does AMD not only increase performance but also improve efficiency? On the next page you can find out what the performance and power requirements are.
