Multiphysical simulation can do much more than perform calculations to verify prototype specifications: innovative companies and engineering firms use simulation to optimize their designs for performance and efficiency.
For example, shape and topology optimization are used to make geometry changes on the way to the optimal design, while parameter estimation is useful for inverse problems where the physics is known but the input quantities are not. The optimization process can be complex, involving non-linear phenomena – and often leads to surprising results. Regardless of the physical conditions, specialized solver algorithms are required to make the best use of the available optimization techniques.
