Some people do not like their smell. Others complain because it makes the skin feel so sticky and oily. Still, we should use sunscreen. Good protection from the sun is especially important for children.

Using sunscreen is like wearing seat belts in a car: annoying but important for safety. And just as it is not enough to tighten once in a lifetime, it is also not enough to apply lotion once.

Questions and answers about (important) important protection, especially for children:

What does sunscreen do?

Sunscreen blocks the sun’s so-called UV rays. It protects against sunburn and diseases like skin cancer. But no sunscreen can stop all UV rays, a few always come through.

However, the cream is good for delaying sunburn: if it has a sun protection factor of, for example, 50, then it takes about 50 times as long as without cream before sunburns form.

How much sunscreen is useful?

A lot helps a lot: Most people do not use enough sunscreen. After applying lotion on the whole body five times, the bottle should be empty – at least for adults with a 200 milliliter bottle.

Children should spread a whole teaspoon on their face alone. If you have swum or played sports, you should also apply cream. Because the cream can go away by washing or rubbing off.

Otherwise, it is recommended to lubricate again every two hours.

What sun protection factor is needed?

According to the German Society for Pediatric and Adolescent Medicine (DGKJ), the sun protection factor for children’s sunscreens must be at least 30, which means that 97 percent of the light is absorbed. “An SPF above 30 only slightly increases the protective effect – the use of a sufficient amount of lotion or cream is much more important,” says DGKJ.

DGKJ experts also advise not to be stingy with cream. “Under no circumstances should you save on the cream, sun protection must be applied generously. Thorough cream should be applied at least twice a day and again after each bath. “

Is expensive sunscreen for children better?

Children’s skin needs special protection from the sun. In a test from Stiftung Warentest, the cheapest sunscreens for children came out on top. achieved. They provide good protection against radiation and give the skin a lot of moisture.

During the review of the Stiftung Warentest, the focus was on the practical use and effect of the lotions. Criteria used to evaluate were e.g. “compliance with the declared protection”, “moisture enrichment”, “use” and “labeling and packaging”.

Which children’s sunscreens do particularly well in the test?

Four of the 17 creams tested by Stiftung Warentest received the top rating “very good” – all four come from discount stores or pharmacies.

“Cien Sun Kids” from Lidl and “Lavozon Kids Med” from Müller received the overall rating “very good” (1.4). Both have a sun protection factor of 50+.

Second place went to “Ombra Easy Protect Kids” from Aldi (sun protection factor 30) and “Sunozon Kids” from Rossmann (sun protection factor 50) – also with the rating “very good” (1.5).

Eleven additional sunscreens were rated “good” – including creams from Bübchen, Edeka, Eucerin, Nivea and dm.

Expensive natural cosmetics for children sometimes fail with “inadequate”: “Baby & Kids” sunscreen from Eco Cosmetics costs significantly more than the test winners. According to Stiftung Warentest, however, it only provides insufficient protection against longer-wave UVA rays.

How important is a high sun protection factor?

According to Stiftung Warentest, an important criterion is that children use products with a high or very high sun protection factor: 30, 50 or 50+. In principle, they could use the same sunscreen as their parents.

“Most sunscreens for children are labeled as perfume-free. This is important for those children who are allergic to fragrances. Three sprays in the test contain perfume. However, we did not find any critical odors in any of the products, ”the test report states.
