• Unique monkey-style monkey images make up a collection of 10,000 NFTs
• Eminem and several other big names have already jumped on the bandwagon
Unexpectedly, the value of the collectibles skyrocketed
The Bored Monkeys Club
Bored Ape Yacht Club is a collection of 10,000 NFTs developed by Yuga Labs in the form of unique digital images, each showing a portrait of a cartoon-style monkey with a dull expression on its face. As with any other NFT, ownership of a particular piece can be uniquely assigned and proven by an identifying address stored in the owner’s wallet. But as Forbes explains, there is something special about this particular project: Anyone who buys one of the monkey pictures acquires not only a valuable collector’s item, but also a membership card for a virtual club and all the exclusive benefits that come with it. According to the developers’ vision, the iconic monkeys should not only function as mere avatars on social media accounts, but also as a kind of digital identity.
Why bored monkeys? This is related to the folklore of the crypto community, as the founders of Yuga Labs explain on Twitter: “There is a long history of people lovingly calling themselves monkeys in the crypto world. That is why some of the rarest and most valuable NFTs are in cryptopunk. collection the monkeys. We liked the idea of creating a whole collection of monkeys that have become so rich from the advent of cryptocurrencies that they are extremely “boring.” And what would a bored monkey do? Maybe retire a secret club in the swamp. ”
At first, it did not seem that the creators of Yuga Labs got much attention with their monkey NFTs. As OMR reports, at the start of sales in April 2021, only 650 BAYC-NFTs were sold to collectors instead of the targeted 10,000. The project could only really take off when a well-known personality from the crypto scene after the unveiling and the official start of the collection entered the business with the virtual monkeys in style. When the tweet from a so-called “Honorary Apes”, ie. an influencer who had received one of 35 “honorary member” NFTs as a gift from Yuga Labs, NFT entrepreneur Jimmy McNelis aka “j1mmyeth” drew the attention of the Bored Ape Yacht Club this by buying large quantities of the NFTs and recommend them, which made the ball roll.
2. What was the inspiration behind BAYC?
There is a long history of people lovingly referring to themselves as monkeys in crypto, and therefore some of the rarest and most valuable NFTs in the Cryptopunk collection are the monkeys.

Eminem secured his personal monkey – With cap and gold chain
The Bored Ape Yacht Club already boasts an impressive list of members. Stars who have already acquired BAYC-NFTs include musicians and rappers like Snoop Dogg, Future, Lil Baby and Timbaland, but also prominent DJs like Marshmello and The Chainsmokers, as well as NBA player Stephen Curry and talk show host Jimmy Fallon. According to OMR, the anonymous NFT collector “Pranksy” sold one of the monkey NFTs to the famous DJ Steve Aoki, who promptly announced this to his wide audience of Twitter followers. NBA star Tyrese Haliburton even carried his monkey, which was also sold to him by Pranksy, on his sneaker while playing for his team, the Indiana Pacers, against the Trail Blazers. His rival Josh Hart, who plays for the opposing team, could not help but tweet to his fans that his own BAYC monkey was obviously much better equipped with rarer features and accessories.
So far, however, the monkey that went to rapper Eminem has attracted the most attention: He is wearing a gold bomb jacket, a gold chain and a green army cap, an outfit that also hangs in the “8 Mile” star’s closet. “EminApe” cost the rapper as much as $ 460,000.

The value of digital images is rising sharply
From the rather modest beginnings of the Bored Ape Yacht Club, the value of blockchain monkey images has skyrocketed in ways not even developers could have imagined. Not only the commercials that the rappers, DJs and super-athletes as well as the big players from the NFT industry made for the club caused the Apes to explode in value: As Forbes reports, even the American cult magazine Rolling celebrated that Stone entered the world of NFTs resembling one of Yuga Labs monkeys on the front. German sporting goods giant adidas bought a Bored Ape in September 2021 at the high price of $ 156,000 and announced that they wanted to partner with Yuga Labs and several other founders from the NFT scene.
All the fuss has meant that the average retail price of Bored Apes has now settled at a staggering $ 277,000. The more unusual the clothing, accessories and grimace of the respective monkey is, the higher its value. The current most expensive example, Ape # 122, is offered for $ 311,070,000,000,000,000.
