There is an urgent need for reinforcements for children’s and youth choirs

Gelsenkirchen.
Gelsenkirchen Music School is looking for reinforcements for its children’s and youth choirs. A free tasting is possible on May 6th.

The pandemic has also left visible traces in the municipal music school: the children’s choir counted 29 participants in the time before Corona, but currently there are only eight. The youth choir’s cast decreased from 21 to 13 active members in the same period. To counteract this negative trend, there is now not only a staff reorganization, but also an open choir rehearsal. This opportunity to get a taste of things will be available for the first time on Friday, May 6th.

Set a new impulse with fresh faces

“With the open choir rehearsal, we want to give a new impetus and give children and young people the desire to sing along,” says Christian van den Berg-Bremer, head of the music school. Prior knowledge is just as necessary as pre-registration. Children between the ages of 9 and 15 can simply look past the joint rehearsals on 6 May from 4.15pm to 5.30pm in the music school’s premises at Rolandstraße 3 in Schalke. Young people aged 15 and over are welcome from 17:30 until 19:30. Participation is free.

The head of the music school emphasizes that in the past there has always been a certain fluctuation. “But this time there are no new ones who have taken over for the children who are leaving. And that has led to this thinning of staff, ”explains van den Berg-Bremer. Other campaigns, such as short trips or public appearances, which in the past would always have ensured a constant influx of new interested parties, would simply have ceased to exist as advertising opportunities because of Corona.

Staff changes should pressure the restart

To push for the restart, there are also some staff changes at the music school: Diana Petrova Darnea is the new children’s choir leader. She lives in Schalke and has made a name for herself as a concert and opera singer. She is a singing teacher and voice trainer and cares for all singers – from beginners to aspiring professionals. For example, she prepares young adults who want to read song for the entrance exam.

The leader of the youth choir and the new department leader is Teik Poi Tan. He is originally from Malaysia, but has also been at home in Schalke for a long time and has since 2010 worked as a voice coach at the local music school. And since 2020, as a teacher, he has also supervised participants in the major subject singing.

One goal: drive away coronary fatigue in children and parents

“With these fresh faces and new impulses, we want to eliminate corona fatigue,” says van den Berg-Bremer, formulating a primary goal. Due to its length and intensity, the pandemic would have led to some lethargy among the children but also among the parents. The new card offer should therefore also be an opportunity to pick up and become active. Parents are welcome to accompany their children to the exercise today.

And anyone who fears that the young choirs will only sing outdated classics should be told: the selection is as wide as it is colorful. “We also sing pop songs and musicals, and we also take care of film music and folklore,” says Petrova Darnea. But the popular classics are not neglected either. If you want to try it for yourself, today is a good option.

Data and facts about the municipal music school in Gelsenkirchen

According to director van den Berg-Bremer, the music school teaches about 1500 students a year. They are supervised by 52 teachers. Students and teachers come from many nations. “We are as colorful as our urban community,” says van den Berg-Bremer.

Another rehearsal opportunity for the children’s choir should be at the other school on Neustraße in Erle. If the children stay with us after they have had a taste of it, they have two appointments a week from now on: a choir practice plus voice training.
