New investor, new long-haul fleet, new destinations: The holiday airline Condor would like to set off and set an example with eye-catching stripes on the planes.

The first press photos, consisting of photo montages, act as a delayed April Fool’s joke: Condor aircraft, whose fuselages, contrary to the trend, are not painted white, but have vertical stripes in different colors, from nose to tail plane.

But the first beautifully painted Airbus A321 in the new design took off on Tuesday and is therefore in daily use. The plane with yellow stripes and the registration D-AIAD took off from Frankfurt at noon for the flight to Lanzarote.

“Condor is holiday. And holiday is striped,” is the motto of the new brand identity. “In the future, Condor will wear stripes in five colors. Inspired by umbrellas, beach towels and beach beds, Condor is evolving into an unmistakable and unique holiday airline,” reads a press release.

Gone are sayings like “We love to fly”, the confusion of different aircraft varnishes and logos on the vertical stabilizer. Founded in 1955, Condor Flugdienst GmbH would like to leave behind the turbulent times of the past three years: the bankruptcy of the parent company Thomas Cook in the autumn of 2019, the departure of the Polish investor PGL, the state aid and the KfW loans. in the million class and the cut with layoffs during the Corona crisis.

Restart of attestor

With the entry of investor Attestor almost a year ago, sufficient capital is available to finally embark on the modernization of the long-haul fleet. Condor transports passengers to long-haul destinations from the Caribbean to Southeast Asia with 13 Boeing 767-300ER aircraft, some of which have been in operation for 29.5 years.

This autumn, the first of 16 Airbus A330neo to order will be integrated into the fleet. The first images of the latest generation of long-haul aircraft being built in Toulouse can already be seen on Twitter.

The new finishes are reminiscent of the pattern of a coral snake and the striped packaging from the lozenge manufacturer Fisherman’s Friend. However, the main colors yellow and blue in the new corporate identity still show a certain closeness to Lufthansa, which had said goodbye to its melon-yellow wreath symbol, also known as “fried egg”, in 2018.

Not the logo, but the ringed body is marked

In addition to the striped look in the colors yellow, red, blue, green and beige, Condor also introduces gray as a contrasting color. The appearance is so dominant and unmistakable that the Condor letters are only in lower case and greatly reduced in the lower part of the fuselage between the cockpit and the wing bracket.

The condor sign, the symbolized condor in a circle, is also adorned in a reduced and slightly modified way on the tail unit. The once historic logo design goes back to designer Otl Aicher, co-founder of the Ulm School of Design.

With the repaintings, which also affect the Airbus A320 and Boeing 757 fleets, but not the older Boeing 767s, the interior of the aircraft will also be inspected. Condor boss Ralf Teckentrup promises new uniforms for the crews, from scarves to ties and even new cutlery on board to a redesign of the website.

Condor has “rebranded” cost two million euros, which was created under the leadership of Remo Masala from the Berlin agency Vision Alphabet. “Our new brand is stripes, our logo stands for our origins and the colors for diversity,” Teckentrup said at the presentation.

The new design should polarize. But one thing is already certain: Condor mixes the plane’s sad monotony and gives more color to the sky and to airports. Their aircraft will be more recognizable from a distance than any other airline’s jet aircraft.

Another five aircraft are to be repainted over the next few weeks, so six aircraft in the new design are on their way in the summer flight plan. The first new Airbus A330neo, which has already been painted in Toulouse these days, can take off from the fall.

The striped planes are still an exception, but Condor has the courage to declare their special liveries the standard.
