Ardbeg Fon Fhòid – a pioneering effort

Islay / Munich, April 14, 2022. A few years ago, Ardbeg buried two almost finished ex-bourbon barrels with Ardbeg in Islay’s peat with the help of the then distillery manager Mickey Heads. The aim was to find out what influence an oxygen-poor, watery and swampy storage site has on the maturation of Ardbeg. It is most likely the first ever recorded underground maturation experiment in 2 years and 10 months. The result of the excavations is now 456 extremely rare and unique NFT Ardbeg whiskey bottles. Dr. Bill Lumsden, Ardbeg Master Distiller says:

“I think you could say that we have brought a very special Ardbeg to light here. Ardbeg Fon Fhòid – is earthy, peaty and smoky with a good nose! ”

Ardbeg Fon Fhòid (Gaelic for “under the sod”) is a limited release of 456 virtual bottles, available worldwide from April 19 exclusively on BlockBar.com. BlockBar trades NFTs (Non-Fungible Tokens) as digital assets for a number of specialty distillates on its platform. Those who are lucky enough to be able to buy the whiskey virtually will receive a digital version of the bottle as an NFT. This can be stored, exchanged or exchanged for a physical bottle. So Ardbeg Fon Fhòid can be enjoyed in all its smoky glory whenever you want.

Thomas Moradpour, President and CEO of The Glenmorangie Company, owner of Ardbeg Distillery, says:

“We are very pleased to launch this exclusive and first Ardbeg NFT bottling – one of the most sought after whiskeys in the world. Our whiskey producers are constantly pushing the boundaries of experimentation. This is a chance to own one of their most exciting creations to date, a true piece of Ardbeg history. “

Dov Falic, CEO and co-founder of BlockBar said:

“We are very excited to partner with Ardbeg to launch the first Ardbeg NFT. We hope whiskey fans, new and established, will take the opportunity to join our community to discover this peat-like experiment. BlockBar will keep the bottling under perfect conditions until the owners are ready to enjoy it. ”

ARDBEG FON FHÒID SMAGSNOTE (45.5% ABV)

COLOUR

Pale straw

ON THE NOSE

Strong, waxy and salty with a strange but distinct moss note. This is followed by a touch of molasses or sugar cane. A down-to-earth note in the background, like getting into a damp whiskey store. A splash of water releases several herbal tones, with asparagus or artichoke. Then comes a waxy, oily scent, reminiscent of a newly grown jacket, along with a distinct soap aroma.

ON THE GAME

A slightly dry taste is followed by salty notes of grilled artichokes, ground pepper with a touch of rye bread. Classic Ardbeg smokyness is understated with notes of tar-wet fennel.

EXAMPLE

Strong and slightly dry, with pronounced bacon salt.

And here is the message to the committee:

Dear committee members,

A few years ago, under the cover of darkness and with the help of the then distillery manager, we buried two almost finished ex-bourbon barrels of Ardbeg in the peat in Islay.

Just why? Our natural curiosity was aroused. We wanted to find out how an oxygen-poor, watery and swampy storage space affects our beloved Ardbeg. It is most likely the first underground maturation experiment ever recorded.

the drama

The result of our excavations is now 456 extremely rare and unique NFT Ardbeg whiskey bottles.

“I think you could say that we have brought a very special Ardbeg to light here. Ardbeg Fon Fhòid – is earthy, peaty and smoky with a good nose! ”
